Clear, organized lecture slides and mostly reasonable questions on quizzes and midterm. In-class questions were confusing at times. Overall a decent professor.

Comment:

Kind of funny. Pretty harsh with grading criteria. For the exam it seemed several answers could have been right. In lectures you need to bring a specific paper for short responses that are over something covered in class that day. You lose points if you use a paper provided. Not unreasonable, but not great. This class makes me dislike biology.

He has pop quizzes on material covered that day in class which are confusing. Essays for exams are take home but he grades them harshly. Exam questions are more difficult than anything covered in class. I would take the class with a different professor, if possible. However the bio department overall isn't the best so good luck

It was fun to attend class because he was extremely funny and did well in keeping the students attention, but he is a hard grader, which is annoying. If you ask for feedback he gives it to you, which is always a plus.

I really enjoyed Dr. Klompen. He was genuinely interested in what he was teaching and really seemed to want to help students. His assignments were meaningful and not busy work, unlike assignments from previous professors in the other modules.

LOVED Dr. Klompen! He's very personable and is genuinely interested in what he's teaching. Taught the malaria module, which I found fascinating. Best teacher out of this class. Responded to emails very quickly and was very helpful. Breath of fresh air after the cancer module. Lenient grader, too!

He was an alright teacher. Not too great, not too bad. He taught the Malaria module which was pretty boring; it would be interesting if you had malaria or needed to study it for high research purposes. Was pretty clear, nice guy, exams were pretty fair, lot better than some of the other professors we had for this class for mixed modules.

I like that he provides a lecture outline for you to print and jot notes on. Not really an amazing or terrible professor... takes a lot of information from the book, but for some reason grades how well you take notes in lecture. Only bad aspect was my foreign TA who didn't really... understand much/wasn't very helpful.

meh. Not the worst ever but given the choice between him an an unknown, I'd take the unknown. Many test questions tend to come from random tidbits from the book that may or may not have had an oblique mention in class, which you will be to asleep to hear anyway. Only thing that saved me was that the lab grade is half the final grade. Great ta's

Dr Klompen is a great lecturer. He presents the material well and is always helpful to students. Clearly some of these bad reviews are based on bad student performance. He is straight with his students and does not use tricky questions in the exams. I give him an A.

You can barely understand what he says during lectures. His lecture notes are outlines and he says his exams come straight from his outlines, but if you only study the outline, you'll fail the exams for sure! The outlines don't explain anything you need to know for the exams. He's terrible at explaining everything! Avoid this teacher!

I don't know how Hans got all these bad reviews. I felt he was a really great prof and an interesting lecturer. All you need to do is go to lecture and you will be fine. An "A" is very possible, and you don't even need to read to get one. Go Hans!

Horrible professor!! Did not explain the material well at all. His tests are very unfair. He says that all you have to do is read the lecture notes and you'll do fine, however, the majority of the questions on the tests were from out of nowhere!!! He doesn't follow the book either so that is no help. Don't take his class if at all possible.

Def took class thinkin that as a bio major, if i put in a good amount of study time n went to every lecture would do ok.No matter how much studied w/ lect notes and book, received a flat 70 on every test.He just plain expects you to pick up EVERY detail.Basically impossible to get an A unless you memorize EVERYTHING you read and hear.

DON'T TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. Just don't. You're asking for trouble. The tests are based on lectures, so if you don't understand everything in lecture and go to your book for solace, you're in for a rough ride. I also got the impression that he was there to do research, not teach. Try to get another prof. if you want a decent grade.
