New languages are tough but Dr. vanderLeest goes out of his way to help you succeed. If you go to every class with the material prepared you will get an A. Tests have no surprises and he makes it crystal clear what is expected. Course pace is fast; so god help you if you skip 2 classes in a row - you will never catch up in time for the test!

Never taken more than 3 days to grade anything, old fashioned but if you're taking Latin you have to expect that. Always willing to make time in his schedule despite being head of a department. Has personally taken time out of his day to tutor me for free. If you try and work hard, he will be more than happy to help you and work hard for you.

VanderLeest calls of people at random to answer questions from the previous night's homework, if you're not done- don't go. He'll walk you through something if you get it wrong but if you're going for an easy A, reconsider. Don't complain about a poor grade if you don't do your assignments, attend class or tutorials. Latin isn't a bird course,.

Arrogant, self-righteous and snobbish. I think he felt we were an insult to his intelligence. Definitely turned me off classics (and I am dean's list student)

Very knowledgible on the subject, makes lectures fairly interesting, but definately needs to loosen the **** up outside of the classroom. Not a BAD prof, but could be better

This was rough... in Latin 1001 he drills you every class and pciks students at random to fill in the translations in class. If you take that class, for the love of god, DO YOUR HOMEWORK!

This guy could teach an empty room without noticing there were no students. His lessons and tests were always structured 'just so'. But, in a way, I liked that because you always knew what to expect from a given lesson and how to pace yourself. This would never be a guy who would need to rust everything at the end.

He is the most unapproachable, unfriendly, cold person I have ever met. He is sporadically amusing but has high expectations - and I work very hard! He needs to loosen up, especially on an individual level.

Tried to make class interesting but still pack in a lot of info. Very organized - few to no tangents. Did indeed seem less friendly in office than class, but was accomodating when I had a medical issue. Probably just more comfortable in front of a crowd than an individual.
