I loved this class. I was glad to take if before he retired. He is one of the best lecturers I have ever encountered. His experience about the Vietnam War is truly touching and tear jerking. And his openness about his sexuality is admirable! I am very glad to have taken this class in the Spring '10.

Henry Abelove is a wonderful teacher and an all around wonderful man. His lectures are interesting and peppered with personal experience. Take advantage of office hours if you ever have him (rumor is he might be leaving now). Also, be sure to follow classroom rules. They're not much, but he takes them seriously.

Comment:

A wonderful, warm and easy-going man who is tremendously well-informed about the subjects he teaches. While he does favor historically-focused criticsm, he is very open to student ideas and really tries to encourage productive discussion in the classroom. You will learn a lot from him without ever feeling too stressed about his classes.

His small lecture class was fun and we all definately shared a lot! Biggest criticism would be his over emphasis on just western and/or queer views on sex. All the books we read were in support of his views only. Would have liked to explore 'alternatives' or rather 'non-alternative' views.

Thoreau FYI class: Abelove is outrageously nice (to almost everybody, there was one student he *really* didn't get along with and they constantly clashed),and is open to almost any interpretation of Walden (which sometimes encourages complete **** from students, which annoys me.)Excellent class
