Comment:
Prof Hanson's First Year Seminar is fairly challenging. We write a weekly essay and have to read a lot nightly. The essays are graded toughly. She is very intelligent, thoughtful, and really cares about her students. We do a number of external activities to familiarize ourselves with the school. Be sure, this class will make you a better writer.

Being my FYSEM professor, Prof Hanson is very helpful and welcoming to all of her students. A lot of work (papers) but she gives solid feedback and lets you drop a paper grade or two. I would definitely take a course with her again

Holly Hanson is amazing. For her classes, you'll get out of it even more than you put in, but you do need to put the work in. Professor Hanson has a system that's choose-your-difficulty-level, but whatever you choose, her lectures will blow you away.

Alright, hold on to your hats because I'm about to drop a sick review of Holly Hanson. Professor Hanson is incredible. Like, truly phenomenal. She'll grade you tough but she'll provide all the information and help you need to improve. You'll be up late reading but you'll love her for it because she challenges you to really analyze. Hanson rules.

She's way too spacy. Her lectures hop all over the place and I never know what part of Africa we're talking about. I'm currently scouring the website for an assignment I think she just forgot to upload. She's a tough grader, even though she's really nice. Also, most of the readings are way too boring. I wouldn't take another class with her.

She's a great and intelligent person - not the greatest professor. She's like an overly educated, scatter-brained high school teacher. Silly writing assignments, and unrelated community service required. Highly biased readings by people she knows. Complex topics way oversimplified. Don't waste your money on this class.

Holly is great. If you just want to learn about a subject area, or if you want to become a scholar she can accommodate your level of interest. DO your work, and be fearless in your engagement and you will learn, not what you think you should know, but what there is to know. A transformational scholar!

Awesome class. Lots of movies. Don't do the readings at the last minute. And she DOES make an effort to learn everyone's names and be helpful during office hours (if you actually go see her). Just read the readings and synthesize!

Holly Hanson is a disrespectful, disorganized, and boring professor. I took this class because I was passionate about Africa, and by the end of the class, I never wanted to hear another word about the continent. Moreover, Hanson doesn't pay any attention to anyone who isn't from or working in Africa. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This class worried me all semester, but the general ideas I learned from this class are invaluable. This class has a lot of reading and a lot of written work. Class sessions were not the best as Hanson tried to incorporate a lot of group discussions; straight lecture would have been better.

I did not like this class. I was so excited for it, but it just was not as good as I had hoped. Books were good (generally), but her lectures are worthless. I think I learned more from the movies and books than from her lectures. Tough grader, almost to the point of being unfair, but I appreciated the comments.

Holly is fun, and funny, but more than that, this is a woman who knows her stuff. Under that slightly quirky exterior is a powerful intellect and a serious scholar. Do not underestimate this woman, she may be smartest person you will have the pleasure of working with at Mt. Holyoke. If you are interested in Africa, social justice, poverty

Prof. Hanson is great. There are interesting class discussions, ALOT of reading (but it's not dull), and papers every week and a reading response. It completely destroys everything you ever thought may have been true about trade and colonialism. Definately a must!
