I took his honors course and let me tell you, he is one of the most passionate and charismatic professors I have had. Both funny and witty, he has a ton of insight and truly cares about his students. After being a passive student in his class he invited me to his office hours and really lit a fire under me to do better.

Took him for 2 semesters, he's a great professor and his papers aren't that bad once you get the hang of Keyhole and what he wants out of the assignment. Assigns a LOT of papers though, and also does a bunch of group projects (i've done like 6). My writing has definitely improved and he's a really funny guy and his lectures are great.

Always a tough grader, but very inspiring and philosophical. If you actually pay attention and participate you'll get a lot out of the class. Just don't expect it to be easy.

He is a nice guy but assigns too much work (papers, miscellaneous assignments), expects way too much, gives opportunity for rewrites but doesn't give the original paper an actual grade to begin with, he stressed this keyhole format but its very difficult to understand and if you don't, the grade just goes down. Material is boring, talks whole class

Amazing professor. If you take advantage of one on one with him helps a lot in your grade and understanding of course material. Lots of essays they pile up fast so procrastination might not get it done. Learned so much and definitely became a better writer. Would definitely recommend to take his class but be ready to write. #keyhole

This class is no easy A. However, Newhem is a fantastic and invaluable professor. He teaches a strong foundation for writing and although he assigns many essays, the class is very rewarding. If you work hard and enjoying learning, you'll do well. Be sure to meet with him one-on-one; he's a great personal resource -- and a very cool guy.

Newhem's class is definitely work. He assigns multiple papers (usually without handing back previous ones first) and assigns buttloads of drafts for each. For me, I loved the drafts. I got to go back and do exactly what he taught in class. Unlike some teachers who only give you one shot to get it right, he gives you way more than necessary.

The course itself was the hardest I've ever taken. But it's the course that will help me in my future classes and in life. He's definitely a tough grader, however if you work hard it's possible to get a decent grade. He's fair; gives plenty chances to improve.

Hands down the best English professor I've had. Taught us a great method for writing essays and even promised to pay our tuition if we used it in other classes and did not see a marked increase in grades! I transferred and still use his tips. Its simple,if you want to grow as a writer and are willing to work, take him. If you want an easy A, don't.

The best teacher I have ever had. Before his class I did not know how to write nor did I like it, now english is my strongest subject. Newhem is tough and pretty intimidating, however, you WILL learn how to write at a college honors level. I highly recommend him to those who want and are willing to work hard.

Best prof;hilarious. But, if you want an A,work for it.Tips: DONT procrastinate, submit all work on time and have it ready before class. Everything piles up. And meet with him, he's great, and it'll pay off in your participation grade and he'll keep it in mind when grading your papers. He'll go out of your way to help you though, you need only ask.

i've debated with him in class a bunch of times but im warning you now its useless because once he thinks he is right, you can do nothing to change his mind. assigns paper after paper, assigns rewrites with the previous draft sometimes not even handed back yet. be prepared to work your ass off and be warned - a b in his class is an a in real life.

Great professor. His classes are hard but you really learn a lot. You will write a lot of essays and you will have to write several drafts of each essay, but if you do the work you will do well. I took him for both 101 and 102 and got A's.

Nice guy, but not the greatest professor. His work can be challenging and you need the text book since you will be reading from it a lot. He is late with handing back work. His lectures can be interesting, but he gave up on my class since half of the class dropped and it all went down hill from there.

Newhem is a well-rounded professor, funny, and constructive critique. He does not always use these skills in class and does not hand student work back in an order so they can improve. Last semester, my class didn't get their first 4 essays back until mid-April, so we were writing without an idea of ways to improve. Good honors course and readings.

Absolutely amazing professor, however he is very difficult. Any class with Newhem has the potential to be your hardest. Despite that, if you follow his rigid format that all of your papers must be written in, your writing will most likely improve. If English is your weak point though proceed with caution. Very funny guy by the way.

I remembered the first thing he said on the first day of class was our writing sucks. Now that I finished his course, my writing has improved tremendously! Anyone who wants to write better should take his class. I hated english in high school, but with Newhem, I never felt so interested.
