He was without parallel, sui generis, the best teacher I have ever had. He shook from me the ideas and assumptions I'd carried with me into college --and would likely still be hanging on to. He changed the world for many --and for many who will never have the privilege of meeting him.

As a Freshman in 1978, I recall my first class. We were all talking and he was looking out at us. He finally said in his strong Italian accent, with his infamous grin, "You are all a55holes. And you don't even know it". He was right.

Italo Benin was the best college instructor I had and I have had many over the years. His passion for the questions of philosophy were infective, inspiring me to go further with philosophy in graduate school. I particularly enjoyed his courses Marx and Marxism and Philosophy of Religion. I know many others who were inspired by his teaching.

I had this guy in 1973...he helped me to see the world with different eyes...he was uncompromising...passionate...inspirational...relentless. For graduation, I opted to wear a white suit as a statement of my joy when others chose black robes. He come up to me, shook my hand and without saying a thing, smiled that wry smile of his speaking volumes.

Italo Benin was the best and most inspiring instructor I have ever had. His wit and brilliance was found in every lecture, every conversation. He was the best that Marist College had to offer in the way of philosophy. He was often misunderstood.

I had this LOSER back in '85 & '86 and he was HORRIBLE then! I can't believe he's still there! Take it from an 'old' guy who's been through a lot of classes, stay away!
