Comment:
He is a very unclear professor, he doesn't include any notes and expects us to write down everything that he says (even though he rambles a lot). He does not give good feedback on exams. All he wrote on my midterm was "Nice handwriting, B". He did not give back our final paper, our participation grade or anything else going into the final...

Don't take Spalding if you are an Art History major. It's like the blandest class I've ever taken. It's a good class to take if you just want to get the art requirement out of the way. Just write down all the things that he talks about, write a lot for the midterm and final (I don't think he even read my essay) and it's an easy A.

He is an extremely scattered teacher and there is a ton of information to learn for the midterm and the final. If you write more than 4 pages you'll get a good grade, just keep rambling on. Very low maintenance class. Make sure to pay attention to the comments he makes about the artwork, if you include weird details you'll get a better score.

The class is all over the place and he always goes off topic. It is a very low maintenance class and you don't even have to show up. However, grading is so unclear and you do not know where you fall on the grading scale. He has office hours but refuses to ever meet me. He does say very offensive things in class that a teacher is not allowed to say.

Professor Spalding was pretty easy going. His lectures were long (not a fan of Art History), but he added some funny comments to make it interesting. There's a midterm, paper, and final. He tells you what types of questions will be on both, but its your job to know how to answer them. Made me appreciate art a little more. He likes good grammar!!

First of all, Jack Spalding is a really great guy. He is extremely understanding and if you plead your case to him he will listen, at least he did in my case. Yes the grading of the class can be unclear and you might not be happy with your grade - the class is extremely low maintenance and great for the core req.

Spalding is the perfect professor if you're taking this course because it's required. As they said below, he is super laid back. You don't have to show up for class, but make sure you have a classmate that does, for exam dates etc. exams are not easy but you will manage(if you get what i mean). He's lenient with grades as well.

Prof. Spalding knows a lot. You don't have to go to class and there is only a midterm, a final and one paper. However his grading procedure is totally unclear. The whole class seems quite arbitrary, and while it is an extremely easy class with no effort required, you may not be pleased with your grade at the end.

If you are the kind of student who is really focused on your GPA then do not take Spalding. The class is easy--you can sleep and text during it and he won't noticecare, and there's no homework, but his tests make no sense regardless of how well you know the material and your random grade is a reflection of the randomness of the class itself.

He is very laid back. If you have a certain GPA requirement all you have to do is tell him and hell get you there. Claims that he will never give a grade below a C-. Funny Guy, in a cynical way, gives absolutely no assignments, doesnt do weekly presentations anymore. One final and One term paper.

He's class is vague, but he is a really funny guy and I always look forward to going to his class. You'll always be laughing. One mid-term and one final-not that hard as long as you study. Whole semester is a joke, you do a presentation 1x a week and it's just presenting info on a work of art. Take advantage of a laid back class, I'd take him again

Guy is insanely lost, but really nice. the things he says are really funny. insanely boring class, only went about half the time. no HW only midterm final paper and final, and if you do bad on the midterm he lets you drop it and use the final to determine your grade. Definitely take if you dont care about the subject

Whimsical guy, but the grade you end up with is a total crapshoot. No homework but midterm and final are bluebook. Enforces the policy of a B- average for the class. If you're okay with a B- take, if not, avoid him. He's an okay guy but the class is incredibly boring and he's rather unclear in his lectures.

I love art history(minor) but this class was extremely boring. He jumped around A LOT and in terms of grading told us that he can't give out all A's so he would give random people B's. Midterm and final were 1 question that you were "allowed to write as much or little as you want"...still got B even with 3 full blue books. don't take.

In the beginning I was completely bored out of my mind, but then I came to appreciate the whimsical character that is Jack Spalding. Essentially as an EP class we all had to do reports once every other class, and then he would expand upon what the students talked about. You do have to memorize a ridiculous amount of information for the exams!

For Intro to Art Hist, don't get the textbook. Costs too much and you don't need it. Class is structured around each student giving a quick talk about a specific work, and then he elaborates. Other than those (about 10/student), a midetrm and final. Both essays and graded TOUGH. If EP, need to do 15p paper.Go to art exhibits for xtra credit

Very boring teacher. Class is pretty much pointless. Only three things graded the whole year and grade are pullede out of a hat. Make a good first impression or else he will just give you a c+

This class is absolute filler. I skipped it just about every time for more than half the semester (you have to make the occasional appearance just so he knows your somewhat involved) but other than that this class is a breeze. Flatter the guy to get around any bumps in the road (late paper, attendance etc.)
