She's crazy, like I mean mentally crazy. But she makes for a fun and exciting classroom. Never really know whats coming next and her wide range of experience offers an opportunity for you to really learn something,I really enjoyed this prof and this class.

Comment:
Smyth is unsettlingly nice and kind. Quirky, eccentric, sometimes bizarre, but always good for a good time. The three hours literally flies by, and is filled with laughs. Easy to get an 80-85%, though the subjectivity of creative writing makes anything higher difficult. Plays fun 'parlor games,' and I she really actually helped improve my writing.

Really nice and helpful when approached outside the lecture, very quirky and eccentric lady. Learned a lot about editing and condensing more meaning into a smaller writing space. Think I lucked out with a good group of writers too. Everyone actually cared about one another's work and was insightful.

Comment:
Revision assigment and presentation very open to interpretation, but as a writer you don't need things spelled out (hopefully). Had entire class to her house for final reading in 336! Will provide clear feedback/encouragement; just seek her out outside of class. 336 has better writers and therefore is more fun than 335.

Smyth is quite an eccentric professor, and I mean this in the best way possible. She is obviously keen on helping the students improve. And no, she does not grade based on personal genre/style preference. She is also very approachable and personal with her students. I am definitely glad to have crossed paths with prof. Smyth. Awesome prof.

Really wants to help her students; helped me out with some admin screwup after only 2 weeks in class. I think it's funny that people are rating based on who's in the class; I guess bad writers shouldn't take courses in writing to improve.

Great Prof, funny, approachable, but terrible class. Frusterating to see so many talentless beginners write useless poetry. You have to read everybody's retarded story and give feedback to people who don't know jack. Someone wrote a poem about Cancer Sticks (cigarettes). Considered suicide.

She's unclear about what she expects from the revisions. She has the class give all of the feedback, even though she's the one marking the work. Writing is subjective, yet she insists her way is the ONLY way. Forget talent - if she doesn't like your story (b/c of genre, style, etc) it won't do well.

FUNNIEST STORY IN ME WHOLE UNDERGRADUATE CAREER: This prof comes ON THE FIRST DAY and the sun is in her eyes 'cause the SUN IS SETTING & when a student offers to shut the blinds she says "No its okay, it seems to be going off to the East" HELLLOOO,"THE SUN RISES IN THE EAST AND SETS IN THE?? WEST"

She's really nice, great to talk to, but the classes are usually filled with talentless hacks who can't write for beans. A course for beginners.
