Most inspirational teacher I've had in my life. Came into college with a blank slate, and he filled it with the will to be he best student and person I can be. Read your best friend, listen in class, write programs, and know that Mel Ott hit 511 home runs, and you'll do better than great.

Canning is the most motivating professor i have ever had. All you have to do in his class is Sit. Read. Think. Doodle. and Do. You do that, and you do your Homework. You'll do fine on your exams and final. I enjoyed every lecture in his class. He's also a funny guy.

I will never again meet a man as amazing as Canning and a simple 350 word limit would not do justice on how awesome he is. If you are serious about learning C you will learn alot. Without a doubt an anti-slacker class with the heaps of challenging HW he gives and extermely rigorous tests. The final was the hardest test I've ever taken in my life.

Great class. He has a passion for teaching and cares for his students to know them by name. Just read the book, listen, and do homework and you'll get an A. Not an easy class but the things you learn are extremely beneficial.

Lots of programming in 101. get your work done, dont be late, enjoy the subject and you will be fine. Best friend is you textbook and second best is Canning! Hard but great course! Learn alot.

Canning is the man. He is extremely helpful and one of the smartest professors in CS. He expects you to do work and tests are medium difficulty. You have to read the book. He knows every one of his students by first and last names. So be prepared for class participation every class. If you want to learn the real C, learn it with professor canning.

Read three pages of your book a day, every day and do his assignments. That's all he asks, and the funny thing is that it works. People who complain about Canning's class being difficult are (for the most part) not trying. If you want to learn C, Canning is the guy to learn it with.

Canning is an extremely hard professor to deal with. He has incredibly high expectations, and offers little help to his students. Without a clear understanding of the material before taking the class, any normal, or even above average student would be in serious trouble. To do well in his class you must devote nearly all your time to computing.

Canning is one of the few professors that actually care about teaching. Don't take his class if you don't like computer science. But if you do, It wont be easy but you will be a better person in the end. Canning is inspiring with his passion for teaching and computer science. The world would be a better place if there were more teachers like him.

The course isn't that bad. He gives the code and algorithms for many of the more challenging programs. I skimmed through the textbook and spent an average of 20-30 minutes a night on the course. Under no circumstance should you miss class though.

Jim Canning is the type of teacher who builds all stars. He'll expects a lot out of his students, but a lot of his assignments aren't all that hard. He even gives you the code most of the time. You just need to understand it. If you plan to go to grad school, take Canning. One of my top four professors (with Kheifets, Dubus, Shubov) at UML.

College students are expected to spend 2-3 hours outside of class for every hour in class (unless you're a business major). You can get by with much, much less for this class. He gives you many algorithms. The first packet of programs begins with the formatting rules. They are _NOT_ hard to follow. Canning is one of the few great professors left.

Great guy, great proffessor. However, he expects SO much from every student. If u do not eat breathe and sleep computing, you will never ever get an A. If u spend 5+ hrs a night you should do ok (like a C or so). Great class, but he nitpicks every little detail. A spelling error means 1/2 off on the entire assignment.

It's a collossal amount of work. If you just need to fulfill a computing requirement, see if you can take something else. I practically failed a semester because all I was doing was CS101 HW. Sure, if you're a CS major, he's great, otherwise, steer clear if you have better things to do than waste time reading "Coping with College."
