It's hard to figure him out, because sometimes he comes across as extremely serious and sometimes he'll crack jokes and be pretty friendly. Basically he's brilliant and fascinating. He knows German inside and out, and his historical linguistics knowledge is incredible.

A true expert in an unfortunately not very popular field. Once you accept (and appreciate) his traditional teaching style, you have an unlimited chance to learn incredible things about language and culture. Just go, as long he is around!!!!

Professor Cathey is a legend. He's a great guy and a pleasure to know. BUT his style is a tad odd, and I don't quite understand his grading system. Still, learn what you can from this man. He is a master. I hope that the university names a hall after him when he retires.
