While you definitely do a lot of reading for Historian's Craft, Professor Johnson has chosen books that give you a lot to talk about in class discussion. Also, our two major essays were incredibly interesting and innovative.

I loved Professor Johnson. He is kind, calm, wise, and he will push you. You absolutely must read for this class. There is almost no online summary info of them. Very very helpful in office hours. Participate actively in class, if you don't you'll miss out on the learning/ get as much out of it.

Professor Johnson is a great discussion leader. He sometimes brings us cookies on Fridays, and he is always sweet. He wants to listen to the opinion of every student, and he provides good directions for discussion. He is a fair grader too. Remember to use loads of quotes in your essays and to use them organically. Try to take his class if possible!

I absolutely hated History of Boston. It was too focused on just a few boring topics like busing and immigration and completely ignored the fascinating history of the revolution, etc. Johnson, though, is a stand up guy. He cares a lot about the subject and his students, but his classes are better suited for history majors.

I LOVE Johnson. He doesn't talk down to his students, and he makes a point to know who each one is. He's a fair grader and he's very helpful. I was able to go to his office for help with a lot of my work in the course and he was always able to steer my partner and me in the right direction. Definitely recommend him and the class!

I had Professor Johnson for my KHC seminar, The Culture of World War I, and he was easily my favorite professor that semester. He took us to the symphony. He expects everyone to participate in discussion, but he's so brilliant that you wouldn't dare show up to class unprepared because you don't want to disappoint him. Take one of his classes.

Professor Johnson is the best teacher I've had in college! He's genuinely intersted in his students and his subject, and makes class discussion a priority. While his grading style and expectations take some getting used to, the class is well worth it. Very highly recommended!

I cannot recommend this professor enough. An expert in cultural history but never didactic; he leads from behind and truly values any and all ideas in class. An enthusiasm (if not, appreciation) for the material and an ability to express these ideas in writing is foremost.

I would NOT recommend this class. Johnson is a kind man and a fair grader, but his teaching style lacks direction, cohesion, and clarity. He often demonstrates a distinct lack of engagement or command of the text he is teaching. This class had a lot of potential, but fell far short of expectations.

Prof. Johnson is one of the best professors I've had at BU. HI 316 is a combination of lectures and discussions; Johnson does both extremely well. He expects you to make an interesting argument in papers that goes beyond stating the obvious, without one you will not get above a B+. Also, do not be late for class.

One of those rare professors who's capable of both lecturing AND leading discussions, and one of the few classes I've taken where I've thought about the material outside of class in any significant way. He sometimes meanders into the realm of art-related topics a bit more than necessary, but is nevertheless an awesome professor.

Fusing style with substance, he inspires the imagination, entertains debate, and brings history to life in such a witty, but relevant way. A truly genuine person too!

A patient, kind, inspiring man. Encourages students to actively engage texts and to reflect intelligently. He will go out of his way to accommodate you in all your academic needs. Only rewards exceptional work with A's. Expects writing to be both sound in content and stylelistically/mechanically sound. One of BU's greatest resources!
