Wisdom personified! His teaching style is old-fashioned, but certainly not out-moded. You can learn a lot from this wizened sage, but you will need to engage yourself first. People who find his lectures opaque must learn better active listening skills and acquire a broader attention span than the average youtube user.

He has taught HIST 121 for several years ON A VOLUNTARY BASIS; he doesn't get paid for it, he is there for the love of the subject. Yes,he is a prof, who is older, hard to understand, and not up to date with powerpoint and modern lecture systems BUT he loves what he teaches and strives to help students to suceed. Not the best prof, but a great man.

Professor Stayer is truly a genius in his field. True, he's a little dry, and hard to listen to, but he gives value to everyone's opinion. He's one of the few professors you encounter in first year who really cares for your academic growth.

Stayer's abilities go beyond upper-year seminars: don't take his course! He's an expert in his field and expects his students to be at the same level. Unfortunately, we aren't all one of four scholars on Anabaptism in the world.

Under no circumstances should anyone take a class with this man. He was the worst teacher I have ever had. I have no doubt that he has a great knowledge of his field and if I was doing grad work he would be a great resource. That being said this man should not be in a class room.

While Stayer is clearly a genius in his field, and a very nice man, his teaching style is lacking. His seminars were extremely difficult to stay awake in and few people participated. In the past he has done two term papers about 10 pgs each, but this year he gave us a 25 page paper. The class is not that hard if you make it through class time.

Yeah, having Stayer for 121 might be tricky, but if you get him on his home turf, he's really good. His seminar was one of the few I've taken that actually deserved the title of being for senior students.

The Instructional Development Department really needs to crack down on Profs like Stayer. A genius in his field, but a pathetic teacher. He only wrote on the blackboard 1x in 8 months. What a waste of money this course section proved to be. Wish I could have taken Doris Ostendorf's section. <!>

age is apparent when teaching, doesn't quite seem "all there." real influential and very knowledgable and i hope they get him something great for his retirement. SOON.

I don't like bashing teachers, but I really didn't like Professor Stayer. Overall, he is a nice guy, but I he wasn't understanding or helpful. The course material was dull to begin with, and he certainly did nothing to spice it up. Thumbs down to Stayer.

Professor Stayer was boring, unoriginal and overall a bad teacher. If you have this guy, change classes, immeadiately! University is too expensive to waste your time taking courses with James Stayer.

very well-informed but ill-equipped at running a seminar. does not iterate thoughts well and speaks horribly. picks very dry material as well, but a nevertheless a generous marker. more concerned with effort than quality.

I really like Professor Stayer as a person. He truly is a nice man, but I have to say, he is a terribly boring professor. He invokes no energy into the class. Half the class is usually falling asleep during the lecture/discussion.

Simply the best class last year. This guy is the world's leading authority on Reformation Germany, too smart to understand by times but that is what made it good.

He was absolutely the WORSE professor ever, an example of how a tenured professor can rest on his past reputation (whatever he did 50 years ago) to remain here and teaching.

A very nice man and a world-respected Anabaptist scholar. 341 is essentially a graduate seminar, so watch out, but he's a fantastic prof.
