Comment:

At the start of the year I resented that I had to take this class, but Dopp seriously won me over. He picked excellent texts to study, didn't pressure you to participate in class, and gave thoughtful feedback. He may seem goofy at first but I gained A LOT of respect for him as a person and a prof. I really enjoyed learning from him.

Comment:

I have mixed feelings toward Prof. Dopp. On the one hand, he's an incredibly genuine, nice man. On the other, his class was very boring. Discussion seemed misguided and the poetry merely skimmed. My verdict : if English is an elective or if you're a poet, choose Jamie Dopp. If you lean towards the critical, you most likely will be very, very bored.

I studied with Jamie years ago at Uvic. I have nothing but praise for his undergraduate teaching. If it weren't for him, I may not have made it to where I am today--a professor myself. He is the nicest, most helpful professor anyone could ever wish to study with. He also really knows his material and how to deliver it. He is a great professor.

Very nice fellow, if a bit quiet at times. Tries his best to encourage discussion between the students. Clear about his expectations of student writing/marks fairly. Not a very high volume of work for the class, but you must stay on top of the readings.

Jamie is a super nice guy and kind of a "guy's guy" at that. Likes to talk about hockey, his kids, music, etc in class. Seems very relaxed but is a decently hard markerâ€"he knows his theory really well! The books he chose were fine: most good, some mediocre. I would definitely take another class with him!

Bar none the nicest, most genuine professor I have had thus far. He's extremely easy going and clearly enjoys what he teaches. He connects with his students both as a group and as individuals and is very open minded about new ideas. I'd never read any Canadian lit before his class and he made me fall in love with it.

I've taken 3 classes with UVic's poet/rockstar, and he challenged me each semseter in new ways. An honest, loving, wonderful person with a dynamite sense of humour and a dislike for literary pretension, Jamie made poetry accessible to average guys like me. He'll teach you how to write and he'll put you on the path to soul, beer in hand.

Jamie is the best prof I have ever had. When it comes to Jamie's lectures, you get back what you put in. If you want to sleep through class and only wake up to hand in your essays, you can, but if you want an engaging, caring, and thoughtful experience, you will be rewarded.

A smart, super chill guy who'd probably be good to have a beer with outside of class. Very open to people's ideas, friendly, and a fair marker who appreciates originality. The class itself is totally boring because lets face it, English classes are full of nerds and boring subject matter. But as English profs go, Dopp is one of the best.

Professor Dopp made this course bearable for me. Modernist concepts are not my strength so I was very grateful to have such a brilliant and effective teacher. He's not what you'd expect from an Eng prof. He's a regular guy (a good thing) who can explain ethereal concepts to a practical mind. I wouldn't have survived this course if not for him.
