Most people couldn't stand him or his course and found him very mean. I did not mind him, nothing he says or does is personal as he doesn't even know anyones name so you need to get past his attitude. I also found the course easy and straightforward. I don't think I'd take him again if I had the choice but if you need his course then you'll do ok

Lemelin genuinely cares about his students. Go into the class with an open mind and you will be surprised at how funny he can be. We read 4 novels, however the testing was fair. We were given the questions beforehand and were allowed to have notes and prepared answers. Anyone who is serious about learning french should take a course with him.

Very intelligent man. However, does not know how to teach. There is no reason we should have to learn his "made up grammar", not relevant what so ever. This course did not improve my understanding, in fact it almost turned me from French.

Dr. Lemelin is very confusing. You must pay attention and take notes! If you read and understand the books, you can easily get a good grade. He really tests to see whether or not you read the novels. He isn't bad but his material tends to be unclear. He keeps good office hours but you should not take his course if you are not strong in French.

He is very intimidating at first, but if you put forth an effort and do the work, the course is really interesting. He does not use a textbook and everything he writes on the board is important and will be on the final as short answer questions. He is very clear about the tests and once you get to know him he is oddly charming and funny! Recommend!

This course is a lot of work for a 2000 level french course. He does not use a textbook which makes classes absolutely mandatory. His writing is close to illegible and he does not put notes online He is not very approachable and makes you feel dumb and makes a show of you in front of the whole class. Avoid if possible.

He is intimidating at first, but he's actually a really nice guy and just wants everyone to learn. Make sure you do not speak english in his class though! As long as you study and attend class there's no reason you won't get at least a B in this course!

He's very unclear about most things, and gives misleading names to various tenses. As a heads up, he doesn't speak English, or at least he refuses to speak it if you talk with him outside of class. In class, it's understandable that he'd only speak French.

Smart man, but ridiculously terrible prof. Marks on an inconsistent scale and teaches material that has nothing to do with the course.AVOID THIS PROF AT ALL COSTS. He does not explain his notes and his writing is illegible. IF you have to go to the bathroom during his course he requires that you ask him first.THIS IS UNIVERSITY not Primary school.

wicked wicked wicked prof. seems so intimidating at first, and a lot of people dropped phonetics because of this. he's very stern, but he's wicked, he makes the class interactive and it's a great learning environment because he forces you to do things until you understand them. Tells you exactly what will be on the tests and is a very fair marker.

Brilliant man, but ridiculously terrible prof. Marks on an inconsistent scale and teaches material that has nothing to do with grammar. I got NOTHING out of this course--in fact i'm actually more confused as he decided he would rename verb tenses and force us to learn then by the new names. AVOID THIS PROF AT ALL COSTS.

This prof teaches HIS OWN MATERIAL. All of HIS theories about parts of speech etc. He even changed the names that all other profs use when teaching the french language, ie passe compose is to him parfait compose. Don't take this prof if you dont have to. I took 3101 and got 85 with another prof and then taking this course i probably won't get a 60.

AVOID THIS PROF AT ALL TIMES. His theories were impossible to understand and when you asked a question his answers were worse then the notes he had given before hand.Walking into the classroom you could feel the stress and tension from other students.Nothing was clear. But he is a very nice man,ask questions...he seems to like talking somewhat.

Terribly disorganized prof. Student requirements for the course were unclear, and his grading scheme is impossible to figure out. His course is not at all similar to other 3100 classes, as he teaches theories (mostly his own) instead of grammar. He was unconcerned with student difficulty during class. Very discouraging experience, avoid this prof.

Very misunderstood prof. Most bad things said about the man are just people who don't understand the way he teaches. You can't miss many of his classes. But why would you want to anyway? He is good, and I reccomend sticking it out to see what an entire course is like with him. He is one of the best, if not the best.

I made the unfortunate mistake of taking 2 courses with Lemelin in the same semester. I have been speaking French for a very long time and I still had no idea what either his 3100 or 3101 was about. He is absolutely terrible at teaching, and there is no text for either course, he teaches his thesis. No doubt he is a brilliant man but totally cluele

Misunderstood prof! I found Prof. Lemelin was pretty confusing when he was teaching, but as long as you went to class and did the assignments, you're fine. The verb quizzes were a very good way to boost your mark as well, cause it's something you've been doing since you started french!
