I love Jeff. I've taken 3 classes w/ him and they've all been amazing. He is an incredibly knowledgeable philosopher and makes rather dense material wholly accessible for undergraduate students. Grades are typically made up of 4 equal-weight tests (non cumulative) and a short paper or two. Very easy to succeed if you go to class and study a little.

Comment:
Jeff is incredibly smart, and obviously knows what he is talking about. But, he tends to ramble, which can make for boring lectures. He also does not answer questions very well--he is often vague, or answers questions by repeating what he had already said. Also, be warned--your only grades in this class are four tests.

Good teacher. If you have no interest in philosophy the material is inherently going to be tough, but he made it comprehensible and interesting to me. You'll be really lost if you miss one class. Overall I really liked the class

About 1,000 merely's per lecture, tends to talk in the third person, and does not encourage questions in class. Very sarcastic whenever questions are asked and does not help outside of class. Gives very little feedback on papers and tests. The only grades are a few tests and essays.

He tried to convince my class that real triangles do not exist, so it is immensely difficult just to take him seriously...

If you don't love Philosophy don't take this class. Lecture heavy, found the tests to be difficult. 25 MC for 50 pts and 2 essay questions for the other half of the test. You really have to understand the material if you want to be able to answer the essay questions. Had to withdraw. Outside of class, he's super nice and ready to answer questions.

Goodman is the BEST! I've had him for one class prior to this one and am taking two classes with him next semester. The material is inherently difficult, but he really presents it in a way that makes it easy to grasp. He also loves questions and will work with you to help you understand the material. TAKE HIM

Dr. Goodman is the best. He makes the material super interesting and he's just such a great, funny guy. Pay attention during lectures and take notes and you'll be good! Exams are all short answer/essay based, so study your notes and read.

If you have to take this class, take him. He sets the class up in such a great way and there are lectures but turn into discussions. The test are a lot of short answer and essays but not too hard.

Great professor with a great sense of humor. Coming to lecture is 75% of the battle for this class. He does nothing through the internet, so you won't even get the assignments if you don't come to class. If you can do logic, you can do this class.

Dr. Goodman is one of the best professors I ever had at JMU. I've never taken an upper level philosophy course or intro and he is absolutely amazing!!! The material is hard but he is definitely the best professor to teach it to you! If I could I'd take his next class if my schedule permitted it. HE IS THE BEST. I feel like I have new perspectives

I love Dr. Goodman. This was my first non-100 level PHIL class and it was the perfect degree of difficulty and really helped expand my mind and the way I think. I declared a Philosophy second major because of him. Take this class!

Goodman does not use Canvas or anything online. There are three or four tests to take that make up your grade. The test are multiple choice and 2 large questions that ask a variety of questions. The best way to do well is to READ textbook, take AMAZING notes and ASK question. Get ahead if you fall behind or else you are screwed...

Go to class! So many freshman think they can skip class and not study and do well like high school, but you can't. Go to class, take notes, and study those notes. Easy. You will get an A if you do this and all of the writing assignments (which are answering questions from the book) His lectures are interesting and I think the material is too!
