Comment:
Hoag is rather dull, but he makes up for it in knowledge. He's pretty good at explaining things and if you still don't get it he's fine to meet with after class. All of the textbook homework is purely for your own extra practice, he won't check it unless you ask for an answer. The writing assignments are time consuming but all doable.

Dr. Hoag is very funny, although his humor may some unintentional at points. The class itself is not horribly difficult, you just have to go to class. His grading can be weird sometimes and he doesn't know the solution to some of the homework problems he gives you.

Professor Hoag is a really good professor! He does assign a lot of homework, but it really helps when the time comes to take the quizzes and tests. He averages the highest six quiz grades and he lets you make up a quiz if you have missed one. The class isn't too difficult like you'd think for math, but it's important to pay attention.

Hoag is a good math teacher. I didn't take calc in high school, so after the first few weeks of pre-calc, most of the material was new. Hoag teaches well, and is very structured in his organization of class. He doesn't check hw, but it definitely helps to do it for the pop quizzes. Drops the lowest few quizzes, fair grader (gives partial credit).

Real is basically the Organic Chemistry of the Math major, so no matter who teaches it, it will be HARD. Hoag is not the best, but hes better than anyone else teaching this class. Go to office hours, he's 100% better with 1:1 than in class. Exams, quizzes and written assignments are all homework and notes based.

Comment:
Class is very laid back and he does not take attendance. Homework is optional but is VERY helpful to review for quizzes (which are once a week) so do it. He's incredibly helpful both in class and during his office hours. The quizzes/ tests are easy for the most part and there aren't any surprises. If you have to take a math I highly recommend him.

I think Dr. Hoag and Real Analysis are a great match. His method of speech is not over your head, but he's not talking down to you... more like conversing with you. The course is basically "Proof of Calc I-III", so review that stuff if you aren't greatly comfortable with it. If you can do derivatives and integrals as a Math major, try a minor.

Hoag is a straight up g. He definitely has your best interest in mind and really wants his students to do well. You don't need to go to class as long as you get notes. His flannel shirts represent his laid back nature and doesn't stress about things. For all tests you get to have a sheet of paper with notes and formulas are included on most quizes.

hoag is hoag. Good in numerical classes, bad in theoretical classes. I guess any teacher would be bad in theoretical classes tho. Hoag's wardrobe owns tho! He actually made geometry fun tho. especially the Ball lecture.

Dr. Hoag's lectures are slow but VERY clear. If you go to class, you should do fine on tests and quizzes. He is not out to 'trick' students like some of the professors I've had. Very nice and helpful.

Hoag made calculus make sense. I took calc for 2 years and I didnt understand it until I took this class. Great guy who goes slow and makes sure everyone understands the material. Simple quizes once a week. Tests aren't bad either

Pretty good guy...average grader, it's just the concepts that are a bit difficult. His weekly quizzes are difficult, so if you want to do well on those, you really gotta keep up. 3 tests and cumulative (very difficult) final. Your best test grade is worth more, and your worst is worth less.
