Comment:
I love this man. Often you hear complaints from students that a professor is a kind and funny person, but unfortunately a terrible professor. I'm happy to admit Professor Matz fulfills both criteria; he is extensively knowledgeable about literary theory, Modernism, and books in general -- while being a caring and easy-going guy. Take his class.

Very discussion based (obviously), so mileage will vary based on class, but overall a fantastic professor. A few reading choices weren't fun (Robinson Crusoe) but their purpose was clear. Offers clear feedback and is unafraid of telling you when you're off-track (a good thing). Clearly loves his subject, which often translates to rest of the class.

Professor Matz is the most incredible professor. Everyone that doesn't have a class with him wants to because he's so unbelievably intelligent. I took his Writing the Mind course which including a lot more reading and writing than the rest of the 103 English courses, but it was completely worth it.

Great professor. I took 'Writing the Mind' with him, and while the material was only sometimes interesting, his passion always was.

Kind, charismatic, encouraging, and incredibly intelligent. He makes you feel comfortable in discussion but also isn't afraid to tell the class how it is. Best English teacher I've ever had.

One on one, he's great. But sometimes makes fun of students he thinks are asking obvious or stupid questions. Obviously knows his stuff, but if you don't have something ground-breaking to contribute to discussion, check yourself before you raise your hand.

One of my favorite professors. I liked Modernism before his class, and now I'm helplessly in love with it. I want to marry it. Has an incredible reading list--Ulysses drove me insane, but he made me appreciate it. Fair grader and very helpful. I can't wait until he gets back from Exeter.

amazing prof and one of the best graders on campus. even better, crafts incredible reading lists. can give a great lecture but, yes it's true, allows way too many idiots to spew their crap theories all over the rest of the class.

I studied 20th Century Brit Lit under him before he left Harvard for Kenyon; he's one of the very best English profs I had in college. I can't imagine that he doesn't still rock.

If he can have his morning smoothy he's great, but when his blender pitcher shatters watch out. When his classes start off with a discernable topic they are some of the best at Kenyon. Just let him start you off with a Dolly Parton story and your set.

Great guy, smart as paint, but needs good students to have a productive class. Often lets too many idiots speak their mind, but is funny when he indirectly makes fun of them.

my arch enemy. great reading list, strange theory list, he is boring, unsure of himself, and didn't do enough to draw me in-- might have been due to class full of idiots. mixed bag of obvious brilliance and dull dull dull. he'll benefit from experience.
