Joe Caddell is a real gem. He loves teaching and clearly has a wealth of experience and his passion for the subject matter is clear throughout each lecture. He does not have a mandatory attendance policy, however missing class is like missing story time and you wont want to miss. Graded on 4 items- thesis, dialectic paper and the midterm and final.

Prof. Caddell is definitely one of the nicer professors at UNC. He is very chill and friendly. However, he only has 4 grades! 2 papers, take-home midterm essay w/ IDs in class, and final is essay w/ IDs (cheat sheet allowed). If you aren't interested in the topic at all, don't recommend taking this class.

Professor Caddell is a UNC gem. You will not find a more nice, laid back, and fascinating professor. He is intimidating at first, but he's more scared of you than you are of him XD. He himself is not a tough grader, the TAs do all the grading, but if you feel that you have been graded unfairly, he'll regrade it to your advantage. Take him!

Worst teacher I've had so far. There are like 3 things you get graded on all year, and he grades HARD. Expect to get B's and C's for no reason. He takes several months to get back any of your assignments, and the criticism he leaves on your essays is usually 2 lines at most and doesn't explain your grade at all. Lecture is so boring 50% don't show

Lectures move super quick so you don't have time to write everything down, but everything you'll need is in the course pack. He's a super funny guy and super caring. He will work with you. Reading is not required but many essay prompts ask about the readings so if you want a wider option of essay topics, do the reading.

Joe is a really cool dude. He basically lectures the entire time and you do not have to come to class AT ALL. Actually interesting material. This class is also Aero 213 and Pwad 213. 3 papers and a final, really not that difficult to do well. Have Joe look over your papers before you turn them in and a B+ or A- will be soooo easy. I did no work.

Best HIST professor here. Lax but very caring. He loves what he is telling you about. His one downfall is he takes forever to grade (i.e. midterm was in September, got it back in December). There are 2 papers in-which he gives you an outline for it, and one midterm (take home essay and IDs). Final is a blessing due to a cheat sheet.

One of the best professors I've had at UNC. Interesting, engaging lectures (not required but the class is much better if you go). I enjoyed the class so much that I took a trip to Washington DC's National Air and Space Museum after finals to see the planes we discussed in class. You learn a ton in this course, but you get out of it what you put in.

Class is solely based on lectures, nothing else. However, he does a good job of making the class interesting. He's also really nice one on one and if you utilize his office hours he will help you a lot and share some cool stories. This class is graded on 2 papers and 2 exams, so don't mess them up.

Joe is a great professor who is a real professional. His lectures move quickly but are interesting if you care about the topic at all. The reading isn't necessary at all. He is slow to grade things but will always give more time for assignments if he is slow grading other assignments.

Great lecturer, great dude. Enjoyed his class and am planning on taking more. He assigns essays that are a good bit of work, but there are only 3 of them and that's basically all of the work for the semester so usually there is no homework at all.

Professor Caddell is an awesome professor. The history of sea power isn't a inspiring topic, but he makes class fun during class, and often makes fun of himself or tells interesting stories. If you don't want to do the reading, I recommend coming to class. You'll do well enough just studying the power points. 2 map quizzes, 2 essays, midterm/final

Lectures and tests don't match up at all. Fair grader, go to him if you don't like your grade. Field trips and really good guest speakers. Would Take Again, without question. Am taking him again next term. You need to use the textbooks for the final, ONLY. Even then, google docs forever!

I took this class because I love air power and was really interested. While lectures were interesting, grading was way too harsh. You get 4 essays that define your grade, and, even if you go to office hours and have him look over it, prepare to feel helpless whenever you get your grades back (midterm grades on LDOC?!?). Prepare to drop this class.

TAKE THIS CLASS. He is the sweetest man on the planet. He wants you to do well. You get tons of feedback in a 200 person class!! He cares and it shows. If you are passionate about war history you will love this and him. It is also an easy A! Perfect class. Wish I could take it again.

Caddell is the man. I've taken both Seapower and History of Intelligence with him. Hilarious, engaging, truly cares about his students, and incredibly knowledgeable about everything he teaches. A bona fide Naval Historian and a distinguished lecturer at the National Intelligence University, he also has interesting guest speakers: Generals and CIA.

This has been one of my favorite classes at UNC so far. Every lecture feels like storytime, and Caddell really knows the material well. Not an easy A, but I would definitely take another class with him.

Caddell is an amazing teacher. He clearly is incredibly experienced and has so many amazing stories, which he often tells during lectures. So if you don't like when teachers go off on tangents Caddell is not your man. If you don't mind then I would highly recommend taking him. Just study the course packet and you will do fine.

Great professor who tells memorable funny stories from his past during class to spice things up a bit. The exams are pretty straightforward and easy if you prepare for them. He doesn't require you to remember ridiculous facts. He does expect well-researched papers though. He can be slow returning papers.
