We did not connect at all. In part with my confusion over whether to go into Art or not, and in part his seemingly cold demeanor. A misunderstanding arose that entirely messed up my semester.. he did not help. & he was upfront about not wanting me in his class. His materials tend to involve recyclables, and has a very limited scope to work with.

Of all the art professors I've encountered, Joe was the only one to offer me concrete feedback based on form and craftsmanship rather than mystical musings or some abstruse art ideology. Plus, we learned to weld--not everyone can put that on their CV!

He was a good teacher and was able to point out exactly what you needed to improve your work. However, if you missed class or needed extra clarification he wasn't the most helpful. Overall, not too bad though. The class was enjoyable but hard work.

Joe has a very limited idea about what constitutes good art. Stick with his aesthetic and you're fine. He is certainly not an out of the box thinker, and is not willing to consider many contemporary ideas about art.. cares primarily about craft and form, not concept.

He is a good teacher, but he has a tendency to wander away when you need him. He incorporates theory and thought into the physical practice of art, and pushes people to grow as artists. He is thoughtful, so in critiques you may look at one piece for a VERY long time, and if you need something from him he may forget. BUT he is a good teacher. Enjoy!
