Comment:

Dr. Bate teaches a well organized course. He is heavy on homework and it's hard to know what he's looking for out of the assignments. I found him to not be very helpful one on one. He was engaged in the lectures but I didn't get much inspiration or enthusiasm from his course.

Comment:

EXTREMELY ENERGETIC is one thing you could call John. He's by far the best prof I've had so far! His enthusiasm and passion for the course is infectious and that's on top of the fact that he's very good at explaining how the world of coding works. If you're willing to put in the time to do the labs and assignments I wouldn't recommend anyone else.

John Bate is the best professor I have ever had. He's energetic about the material, encourages class participation, and very friendly. He shines in 1-1 interaction as he will always make an effort to give you as much information as possible if you email him a question. By FAR the best professor I've had here at U of M.

Fantastic Professor. Lectures are engaging and interesting. Material is presented at a perfect pace. I had no programming experience before this class.

John was overall a good professor. Very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the topic being taught. Explained concepts well. Sometimes I feel like iClicker questions were a little bit rushed over. He holds lots of office hours too and it is easy to get in touch with him if you need help and he is quite helpful if you go to him for help.

Great communication but very rude. Don't take with him if you have the option, many other great profs, he is NOT one of them. Only good thing is how fast he responds to emails, but then again every other prof responds within the same time. Do not recommend

Solid prof, easy to understand thoroughly explained the material and I recommend him to everyone. He was also very easy to get in contact with lots of office hours and he's very helpful when you go to him.

Good teacher. Lectures are fine, he explains things good, and if you practice a lot you can get an A. Assignments are OK, and final was so heavy but OK. But in office hours is where I found he forgets that this is an introductory course: "nonono, this is totally wrong, why would you do that? blablabla" I know I am wrong, that's why I came...

Comment:

One of the best profs easily. Speaks clearly and is very caring. You can tell he's extremely passionate about CS from the way he talks about it. Would love to take another class with this prof. One negative, is that the examples in class are sometimes pre-written and quite long , so it is very hard to follow. But overall I highly recommend him.

Great professor. He explains things very clearly and always takes several breaks in-between his lectures to make sure everyone understands everything, always open to questions and answers them clearly. Can tell he cares. The course itself is quite difficult IMO, expect to spend A LOT of your own time to finish the labs / assignments.

Dr,Bate is an amazing man... but he knows it and is arrogant. His lectures were great... but his explanations were vague and often expects you to already know what he is talking about or to be intuitive. He has great office hours and is usually available between as well. I will never take a class by him again. Free chocolate if you're super smart.

Great prof, explains things clearly. He sometimes forgets that this is an introductory course , and IMO expects a bit too much out of students sometimes. Very homework heavy , some assignments can take a REALLY long time to complete. Overall, a very good prof. The course is quite demanding.

Has frequent office hours and is super helpful during. Take advantage of his willingness to help if you need it, it makes the course a whole lot easier. Good lectures with lots of examples and explanation. Bring a computer to class if possible so you can follow along with the program he is explaining. Also, textbook is free.
