Comment:
A typical GIS class with no real lectures on the meaning and significance of the tools he demonstrated in class. When students asked questions, he could be quite condescending. I thought I was going to be able to expand my skills, but labs aren't as meaningful. I wish we had more options to choose from in regards to instructors that teach GIS.

This dude is super cynical, it's great. He's really enthusiastic about geography and he's peppy in general. My only complaint would be the material covered. The class was "United States and Canada" and he hardly touched Canada and did not cover the American southwest (but the intermontane west was pretty close to this). He really is a gem, though.

Honestly, he tries to be funny & sarcastic but just comes off rude. It was really hard to respect him for that reason. He liked to hold it over the class that he controlled our grades. I can tell he has a passion for geography, which is cool, but he's just not a great teacher. I would avoid him if you can. He doesn't give out study guides either.

The professor himself is an enthusiastic guy and tries to make the class interesting. On that note, the taking notes for this class can be a pain since the professor shows you NOTHING but picture slides each lecture. Is it an interesting class? Yes, the photos on the slides were cool. Is it a class you want for an easy A. Try again.

Dr. Carroll is a great professor. He cares about student learning the material and is very approachable. He is probably the best professor I had while attending CSUF and I learned a great deal.

This is not a rating for the professor but for the class in general & the textbook. I don't recommend this class b/c what u learn is very "elementary". The textbook sucks! I learned almost nothing new about global problems, instead it was like taking BIO 101 again & re-learning about basic science. It was VERY easy to procrastinate b/c it's online.

We covered a large sum of valuable info in 16 weeks. He's not only the chair of the Geog department but he's also one of the best professors in this field. I enjoyed going to class.

Best academic teacher I've had at this school. He teaches from experience, not a handful of outdated notes or powerpoint presentation with someone else's material. Very helpful. Not a hard class at all. Take notes and study, it's not magic. Much of it is common sense. Skip the book unless you get it under $20.

Very dynamic teacher. Loves to use real-world experiences in class, read: he likes you to have challenges & have to figure it out. Because the class is lab/exercise based you have to attend & participate. If you'd rather stay home, read, & pass a test this isn't the class for you.

One of the most charismatic lecturers I've known. Classes are difficult, but not overwhelming. Dr. Carrol is always there to assist or clarify difficult material to grasp, but will make you figure things out for yourself. Work hard in his class and you'll end up learning more than you ever thought you would...and enjoy it!

Hands down, the best instructor I've ever had. Hard? Yes. However, I didn't pay the big bucks to go to college to get an easy class. I learned something and I worked hard for my grade. A model instructor for all instructors. Graduated in 2004. If you don't like him, you're not studying hard enough.
