It's really rare to meet a professor who doesn't simply read off slides the whole lecture. He's so passionate about the course and talks about it without ever looking at his slides! Amazing lectures! His tests and assignments aren't easy though. He expects you to prove you actually read the material. But a genuine professor regardless!

John's a great guy. He knows his stuff and cares about the topic. He loves participation and getting ideas from the class - but you're not graded on it. He's a pretty dynamic speaker. Doesn't like laptops. For exams and essays, he's looking for a solid comprehension of the texts and materials. My worst grade of the semester, but my favourite class.

Existential Philosophy with John turned out to be a great experience! Learned lots and enjoyed his lectures. Great story teller and really cares about student's doing well. It's important to attend the lectures to understand the content and do well on the essay and tests. He's available to chat if you feel stuck on understanding the material.

For those who think this class will be easy because of the prof's high rating, be warned because it's not. I was one of those students who would take a class with a prof with a high rating but this time it proved wrong. He is a really hard marker and doesn't provide good feedback. The tests are hard and require you to understand the readings fully.

Probably the most interesting class I'd ever took at Ryerson! The subject itself just kept me concentrating for the whole class! The prof is very nice and very helpful, but sometime he can be busy. I recommend everyone to take the existential philosophy class, it can very well changed your life!

This is the second class I have had with John Caruana, and I absolutely love him as a professor. He is kind, understanding and extremely helpful. I visited him a few time during office hours and he helped me out tremendously. If you ever have a chance to be in one of his courses, do so. It will be the best decision you will make at Ryerson.

What a nice guy! He's such a gentle, kind man and he's respectful of everyone. He hides his biases well and just presents the facts. Apparently he's a tough marker but I never got anything but A's with him. Go to his office hours for your essay he'll sit down for 20 minutes helping you along. He's a breath of fresh air for sure.

He is a great person, who genuinely cares about giving the students a quality education. However, he unconsciously steers the conclusions of the class topics and texts towards his own. You'll find he regularly responds to alternative interpretations with "umm...no." His classes are stimulating, but question his ideas as you would anyone else's.

He is very enthusiastic about the course material, no doubt. But at least to me he didn't seem like he gave everyone in class a fair amount of respect. But his lectures are very exciting...and he's got this method where he makes his lectures seem almost like story-telling, which was interesting.
