Comment:
Not a bad guy at all but, just very boring and talks way too much and doesn't give much time for any questions or for the material to sink in. Also gives a lot of handouts and posts very little on Nexus. Tough when it comes to marking papers and slow on returning them.

Took a morning class with him and was not expecting to like it as much as I did. Workload consisted of reading and writing reviews on two books and a final exam and paper. Study for those and you'll do fine but it's worth attending lectures just because they're engaging.

I have taken intro to CRS with John as well as history of peace and nonviolence. Both courses were super interesting as he makes his lectures fun and informative. Super nice guy who will help you outside of class if you ask for it. Tough grader but he makes you a better writer because of it.

Unfair marker. Is unclear on assignment requirements and docks marks for everything. Tells students they're coming in with a B instead of waiting to see where they fall. Assigns a lot of reading, but it's doable. Passionate about content, but does not appreciate views that contradict his own.

Good professor but he is a hard marker. You cannot be lazy in his class. Not an easy mark to get. But he does give good lectures and he is willing to help you if you need it. I'd recommend but with caution.

John Derksen is an incredibly passionate and knowledgable professor. The thing I appreciate most is how active he is in class - very animated and energetic. He is extremely clear in every point he is trying to make and very supportive of students. I had him for intro too, he's the reason I want to do conflict res. Awesome prof!

Nicest prof ever! Very passionate and tries to keep the class entertained. Very helpful and makes an effort to learn everyone's name. A lot of times focuses on stylistic things rather than actual course content when grading papers. 10% based on participation. Not a hard class if you show up, participate, and read the material.

Loved this prof! He is very passionate and kept me interested. Extremely approachable and nice. I didn't have any issues with his marking. He appreciates good grammar but most students should be able to meet his standards by this point. One of my favourite Professors!

This professor was really good. I don't think I participated at all though or maybe I did, but very little. Marking scheme was pretty tough though. Ended up with B+ in the course

Cries in class!!! Rooted in a particular standpoint & gets defensive when opposing views are presented. Hard marker, more concerned w/ presentation than content, very particular about grammar. Nice guy, though. Always smiling & remembers students̢۪ names (even years later). But don̢۪t dare disagree with his views or challenge the status quo (of CRS)!

This prof is extreamly nice and very passionate about what he does. hes originally from the congo and even cried in class one day. the way he marks papers is reidiculous. he treats it like youre in an english class and i have never had such a low mark on these papers even though i was 1 of the few who did the readings in order to write the paper

Likes to dance around a lot when he talks, and the class is a little dry. However, he tries hard to keep you intersted in the material and is SUPER nice. Very, very willing to help his students. Nicest guy ever!
