I had Dr. Dinse in 1993-1994, as a doe eyed freshman. I still remember and appreciate him holding our class to high standards while also engaging us in thought provoking discussions. I went on to another university to earn my Master's degree, after my undergraduate work at CMU. Thank you for helping me reach my potential.

The readings were difficult to read but his lecture notes made it easier to understand. The chat sessions also make the material easier and they were really interesting. I was glad I took this class because I learned so much about our political system.

He is very vague and doesn't explain in detail what he expects. I had to email him multiple times because his syllabus wasn't clear. His 3 essay exam questions were very difficult to get an A in even though you answer correctly.

I learned a lot and came away from this class with a new appreciation for the political science. Each of the 3 exams consisted of 4 essay questions and he required a response to 3. Online chats were moderately helpful. Course notes were very useful. Grades tough but fair--give him lots of detail and prove you understand the concept.

Dinse is so boring it's ridiculous. I can't focus in that class, and as I scan the room around me, half the people are sleeping or spaced out. He's not a helpful professor, if you miss a test for even the most dire reason, he won't work with you unless you have some high-level excuse like a death certificate. AVOID THIS PROFESSOR AT ALL COSTS

He knows his stuff! Takes attendence everytime though, and its worth 20% of your grade. The hardest thing about this class is just going to it. If you go and take good notes, you will be fine because tests are all essay. Not too bad of a grader, he wants detail in your essays.

He is nice, but very dry and monotone. The content is somewhat interesting but the tests are pretty hard. He is not an easy grader plus he is very anal about attendance

Extremely DRY, however his classroom discussions are something of legend. He will let his students go at it, creating some great debates. The material he utilizes is still fairly timely, but could be updated. Good Prof

If you want to be entertained, play with your video game back in the dorm. If you want to learn from one of the most insightful professors on campus, take Dinse. Are we past the point of elementary school where we need the "nice teacher" to make us laugh, give us smiley faces, and make class easy? Que Stuart Smalley -I am good enough, smart enough.

I'm a 3.7 senior, and I struggled a bit with this class. I'm very interested in gov't, but it was sometimes hard to keep interest with Dinse. He wants class participation, but usually doesn't look for raised hands, and often cuts comments off. E-mailed him several times and went to visit... not very helpful either.

Professor Dinse is probably going to make many students doze off. Even being interested in politics, he speaks for so long, in the same tone, that you can easily lose focus on what he's talking about. People who aren't interested in the subject and/or cannot articulate their political thoughts effectively should probably find a different professor.

This guy is a ****, his lectures are ridiculously unclear and boring, I emailed him and asked him a question about some communist theory i read in the book, and told me, and I'm quoting "Read the selection, it is apparent in the reading." What the hell is that, I asked him a question and he wouldnt even answer it. Grade A ****!

Without a doubt, one of the most intelligent professors in the department. If you go into the class knowing who Noam Chomsky is, that similar personality comes through. A tough teacher to those who want have ADD or who want a teacher to be as enthusiastic as a DragonBall Z episode. His essay tests are a little gard, yet he grades fair. He's at his best when discussing ideology, at his weakest when using examples: most students find his anecdotes to be a little dull. Take him if you actually want to learn.

dry, monotone, and an old-school lecture style. but a great prof who knows his stuff. if you pay attention, and offer discussion you should do well. i think most people think he is boring, but if they'd participate in class discussion more, he'd talk less and therefore bore you all less.

I am currently in Dinse's PSC 341 class and it sucks. I never realized lectures could be this boring. He is mono-tone, never makes eye contact with the students, and is just plain rood. He is a socialist liberal, and if you are anything other than liberal, he looks down on you. DO NOT take him!!

His lectures are kinda boring, but if u take notes, he covers everything that will be on the exam. His exams are pretty easy if u study for them too. It wasn't the greatest class ever, but it is easy if u pay attention and study. He is SUPER liberal too...so watch out of u are conservative.

The boringest teacher I have ever had in my entire life. Unless you are super interested about Eastern European stuff this class is whorrible. Our entire class can't stand him, I will never take him again. Hard extended essay test, with a study guide that dosn't go with the notes
