GREAT teacher. His only goal is to make sure you know the material, esp. if you are going to grad school where you will be taking music theory placement exams. Homework is not graded. Grades are like two projects which you have weeks to prepare. Really nice guy. Classes cancelled occasionally which is nice. definitely take him

Comment:
Tells great stories about the origins of music theory, and always throws in some great jokes. I think he is one of the best professors in the school of Music. Theory is hard, but he makes it easier to understand with his own systems of teaching the concepts. Highly recommended!

Dr. Hilliard is amazing. It took a while for me to get used to his teaching style since I only had Haney and Hiatt in my freshmen and sophmore years. But once you actually understand how he teaches, the class is a piece of cake. P.S. His two daughters are very cute!!!

had him 1st semester freshman theory. class was ok but he wasn't willing to help outside of class. he took the semester off so for the 1st month w/ a new prof. i was lost. if you take him make sure to continue w/ him! taking from him next semester again b/c it's either him or hiatt

Dr. Hilliard has a great personality and tries to throw in as many weird jokes during class as possible. He was really too smart to be a great teacher, but he will give you all the help you need. Such a nice person, and he always ends class 15 mins early.

A lot here depends on how well you already know theory, if you have no expereince with it you may find it to be difficult. This guy will probably be able to help you, he definitely knows what he is teaching. On top of that he is pretty funny (or just plain crazy!) I reccomend him.

Not a natural teacher it seems. How many true composers are? Motivated students will progress rapidly. Dr. Hilliard is a mentor almost in the Eastern sense; he acts as the student's reflection, so the student can absorb all for which they are ready
