Hoag is a brilliant man, but not a brilliant teacher. He does not communicate well, he responds to all questions with a question, which in such a difficult class, is extremely unhelpful. Expect to spend at least 15+ hours a week on this class, and still get a C or lower. I am an economics major, and this is THE hardest class I have yet to take.

I'm and econ major! But if you want to know about econ this man is a leader in the field. 2 yrs after his class I still go to him for help in other econ classes, he just makes logical sense he is VERY helpful and incredibly smart. The problem most people have in his class is you have to actually want to learn not just sit still and try not to fail

Hardest class I have ever taken, by far. Average grades for homework and quizzes are in the 20s and 30s. Great for future economists, but anybody else should stay away! He seems fair, but in the end he is just hard and too challenging for a 200 level class. You just don't get much out of it in the end,you're just struggling to keep up. Stay away!!!

Worst teacher I've had. Very dry teacher & makes jokes only he thinks is funny. Even though attendance is not mandatory, you don't want to miss any of the classes. Take extensive notes every day in class, and he doesn't even do anything from the book even though there's at least one question on each exam from the book. Stay away from this teacher!!

I like economics but this guy is all over the place and in the end you learn almost nothing. He thinks he is clever, challenging, and funny but he is far from it. I strongly discourage anyone from taking his class, one of the worst professors I've ever had.

I didn't think he was as bad as I had heard. He curved every test and then curved the final grading scale at the end, so that helps a lot. He does teach in a way that is hard to follow sometimes. He doesn't really tell why he is doing something, he just does it. You need to go to class if you want to get a decent grade in his class.

His curve is huge because everyone fails his tests....I am a 4.0 student and I *luckily* got a C in his class. Do NOT take him. He never seems to answer questions, and he just makes you feel really stupid when you ask them.

I was a business major before i took this class. He is the chair of the Econ Department. my girlfriends mom died and I emailed him and he said i had to go to class to pick up my exam corrections b/c he would not let me turn them in late. Class was the day of the funeral and he didn't care he said come to class or loose the points.

People don't like him because the class is impossible, which it is. He is hard, but aren't all econ classes? He is willing to help, but doesn't hand things over to you. If you need help it is your job to go see him and he WILL make you work!
