I took Gothic literature with him. I'm an English major and he was the first professor to really teach me how to write. His classes are for those who love English, want to learn, and want to write better. He's tough, but fair, and if you do the work and follow his extensive feedback it's easy to improve. Overall, my favorite professor at BU.

JPR is a fantastic professor, and has a great ability to make the class interesting and painless. Only 2 papers, normal midterm and final. Everyone does well as long as you show up and engage in class discussion

Cares about class and students. Go to class, do the readings, take advantage of office hours, and actually listen. If you follow these directions you will have a life changing experience in the literary world.

Riquelme's a very smart guy, but I didn't agree with some of his literary interpretations. He's the kind of professor that likes hearing his own ideas cleverly disguised in exams and papers. The class discussions weren't particularly interesting.

I took Wilde/Joyce. Very challenging readings that deal mostly with aesthetics. Do not take this class if you want formalist discussions, though they happened from time to time. He is very open to hearing ideas and speculating. I am sorry that I only took this course with him.

disorganized, overloads you with superflous reading, doesn't stimulate interests in the readings he does give, hard grader, boring lecturer, etc. not a "modern lit" class AT ALL. i took this course as my "fun class"...didn't know what i was getting into. if you're planning on taking this class: good luck, you'll need it.

He sometimes acts like a stuck up war hero, but at other times he's alright. The quizzes are all strongly hinted at and the exams are straightfoward. pretty easy class overall.

DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT take this class with this man. The first class he showed an interesting movie so i thought "hey this will be fun". Little did I know. I have never been so turned off by an english class in my life. He is oscure and obtuse and be prepare to hear the word androgenous about a billion times.

for all that is holy DO NOT take the Wilde/Joyce class. no short stories,no drama, just essays on what art means that make no sense, then a month on ULYSSES -hard core! i'm def not the smartest person in the world but is was totally over my head and he was not helpful, though the anecdotes were amusing

I enjoyed the class. got B/B+ on assignments. Didnt know my stuff for the quizzes but made it through. Sometimes his analysis is a little obsure but other times it is mindblowing. I highly recommend the class if you want to learn how to appreciate and interpret literature and poetry.

What he says makes sense, but he doesn't connect the concepts well enough for you to understand the big picture easily. Not a very interesting course, though the workload is manageable. I'm assuming most people will be getting grades in the B-range. He hints at pop quizzes, which helps.

I found him interesting & entertaining. Graded difficultly for a 100-level class, but was very rewarding to those who worked hard. Recognized people for doing well, and sent personal emails to students who got good grades. Seemed very caring and smart.

weird in a bad way. starts discussing obscure german philosophy and expects freshmen to be familiar with it. To succeed, you have to play his game--talk about obscure points and double entendres and you'll be golden. Find another class if possible

He was funny and interested in what students had to say. Course material is interesting, discussion was pointless. Quizzes were easy if you keep up with the reading.

Riquelme is unpleasent, snobby, pretencious has downright absurd interpretations of text: avoid him and his repulsive ponytail at all costs.

Although some students find Riquelme's interpretations of poetry and literature 'out there', he is a very knowledgeable professor. The class is not difficult if you keep up with the readings and stop by office hours every once in a while.

Anyone but Riquelme. His class makes watching paint dry exciting.Very closed minded, critical of any ideas that don't mirror/spin off of his own, and rude about it in a snooty, pretentious way.Weekly conferences that do nothing but ruin your free time.
