Comment:
John Selmys is one of the best professors at Seneca. I thoroughly enjoyed his classes. Put in the work, do what he asks, you can get an A or A+ and learn a lot more than you would from any other professor. His classes leave you with a sense of time well spent.

Knows the material very well. Teaches pretty well too. But he is a tough grader, no part marks so get ready to study and practice a lot if you want that A.

He knows what he's doing. Great prof to be in class with. Pay close attention to what he says because it will be on exams. Before the final, he will give hints on what it should cover.

Like so many Teachers at Seneca Comp Studies, He was indifferent and tested far above what he taught Didn't care about learning and advancing the class, just going through the motions, a very unreasonable man half the class dropped out in hope of getting a better teacher next time He was lazy and had a cockiness that was very unwarranted

Prof knows his stuff great teacher. Took class twice both times going into exam with an A. Both times failing exam. Prof makes exam to hard for an introductory to programming.

Comment:
Monotonic speaking. Unclear in his assignments and unwilling to listen to reason after it. Outrages marking standards. He will mess your progress in your studies and for no real reason. Avoid at all cost. Bad teacher and even worse person. It is a shame that Seneca keeps people like him.

Good teacher. He is passionate about Linux. Expects a lot from students which may be hard for some people. Only problem is that his labs do not prepare you for his assignments. He expects everyone to become a programmer even though he is teaching system administrator students. Is also a very hard marker.

Comment:
Makes an effort to teach. Overall, the course is too compact+advanced rather than an introductory. You'll be expected to learn in depth commands + all of their functions within a week/be able to use them inside and out. Labs are practical, final is not. Must be able to answer mind boggling questions.

Comment:
Communicates clearly and demonstrates commands and scripts in the lecture all the time. Some labs are lengthy but that encourages learning by doing. Assignments are somewhat challenging but he creates them to mimic something that a real sysadmin might do so they feel practical and not theoretical. Google is your textbook. Great teacher overall.

Brutally hard marker, gives assignments over break, could communicate more clearly, and very out of touch with what it's like to be new to Linux. He really pushes you to learn more and I certainly have learned SO much. Great teacher, but frustrating!! Work hard and pay attention to details. Pay attention to lectures.. super important.

Yes he will make your life hard, yes he will make you sit at home and practice C all weekend. He's a man with lots of C experience and will help you get started to be a successful programmer. To all you whiners, do you come to school for easy grades or to learn? I personally come here to learn, and John will make sure you will learn.

Very good lecturer. Very tough marker. No part marks. If you know what you are doing, you will pass the course with an A, B or C. If you don't know what you are doing, you will fail for sure. Don't slack off and expect him to pass you. Only slackers will fail with him. Hard workers will pass.
