This is my 2nd semester taking Sumner and the guy is just amazing. He lectures the whole time, but he literally will go through proofs, just so you understand how a problem should work and then he will help you solve them and go through many examples with you. You can come to him before a test and he will help you. Overall, great proffesor.

This is probably my favorite professor at UT and Im actually taking him again now. Theres only like 4 tests and he ends up dropping your lowest grades. He doesnt make things tough, so the tests are relatively easy. But dont take the tests for granted like I did a couple times, they are your ONLY GRADES. But he makes sure that you are prepared.

Professor Sumner has a very thick southern accent that is sometimes hard to understand especially when learning Calculus. Homework is optional and not graded which makes it less motivating. Total grade is based on 4 exams and the final with no participation homework or class work to be accounted for.

He's very old school, attendance isn't required, but I highly recommend. He lets you have a formula sheet for tests, so that's nice, but overall he's a nice man and very respected. I would take a class with him again.

Take Dr. Sumner for Calculus 1. He is a great professor and tells you what to expect on exams so there is no surprises. However, you must practice the homework problems he assigns and the notes so you're prepared for anything. He also throws in hints from Algebra just in case you forgot some algebraic steps when solving Calculus problems.

I was honored by being one of his students. I took both calculus 1 & 2 with him. His lectures are amazing, he knows his subject very well and never rushes through the material. He usually gives 4 tests (drops 1) and a cumulative final. Tests are not hard, if you take your time practicing the problems he assigns, you'll earn a very easy A. PROMISE

Hes a tough grader but he is a very good professor. Willing to answer any questions you may have and always willing to help you outside of class if you go to him. His tests are not that hard but hes a tough grader. DO YOUR HW! Its not graded but it will determine how well you do in the class.

He is great! YOu get cheat sheets for every class, he goes over the homework for as long as you would like and always welcomes questions. Very strait forward and tell you exactly what you should expect to see on the tests. He also drops your lowest test grade. He really wants you to do well in his class!

The best Math teacher at UT. You get a cheat sheet for the test. If you do you hw and do a good job making your cheat sheet his class is an easy A. If you don't pay attention your in trouble because he doesn't really teach from the book. So go to class and pay attention.

Run Away! Well considering how terrible the other math professors at UT are, he is the better one. His test are DIFFICULT! You must go to tutoring at the first chance to even have a shot of getting a decent grade on your test. He is an unfair grader on tests and just will not help you out if your close to the next grade. You have been warned

Wow, he really isn't as great and as easy as everyone here says he is. Before taking him I looked at all his ratings on here and I thought he would be a great math professor to take. How wrong I was. I really wished I had listened to the person below me, and not everyone else. I wish I had taken mat 170 with someone else.

too much material, too fast, no helpful solutions. No mymathlab, nothing. really sucks, he does not teach algebra for dummies. He teaches to the highly skilled in math, not the newbies. Take someone else.

Kudos Dr.Sumner! Hes the best math prof there is. If you plan on not going to class, dont think about taking calculus. He explains everying in great detail, & doesnt mind going back to lower level math stuff if you ask him in class. He retaught me algebra and trig in Calc; thats how good he is. Finals are the same as prev tests. Love his dorky joke

Dr. Sumner is the SH*T!! Extremely intelligent. Makes the material very easy to understand. Lets you make formula sheets for tests. ALWAYS has a review day before any exam. Refuses to gives "tedious" problems on an exam for the sake of time. I highly, highly, highly recommend him!!! You won't regret it!

Sumner is a little boring and monotone but his class is so easy, you will have to try hard to fail. He drops your lowest test grade which is always great and the final exam is a mixture of all your tests put together. His tests are so simple and he even lets you bring a cheat sheet in!

Attendance is not mandatory, thank the lord, but he does give a lot of notes in class. He also tells you what are on the exams. Sumner is the shizzzzznit!
