Ive taken two classes with him & will take another when one I need is available. I have a bit of a crush cause hes a great professor & I enjoy his lectures. Hes also understanding if open communication is sought after. There is a lot of reading, and definitely take notes/mark pages. He likes participation, too, so try to speak up in class.

Good professor, but expects his students to prioritize his class over everything else. 336 is a semester long research paper. We were expected to be at our research sites multiple times a week while taking a full course load and doing whatever else we do outside of school. Lots of papers but they all help create the final research paper in the end.

I enjoyed this class. I'm disappointed to learn he'll be on sabbatical as I'd love to take another course with him; I hope I'm able to in the future. I definitely recommend him, especially for sociology and anthropology majors.

I'm almost out of this class, but I thought I'd go ahead & give him a review. He's a great professor; he's available when needed & understood my limitations that have come up this semester. The content is interesting, but I'm not much of a talkative person in class & I think it's kind of expected. I'd still enjoy having another class with him.

Zen Anthropology was my favorite class I've ever taken. John is passionate about teaching and in helping you succeed. While the workload was not light, it was worthwhile and enriching. He offered plenty of office hours and options for scheduling personal chats. Will help you if you ask and are willing to work. Absolutely enriching course; recommend

Dr. Wood is by far one of the best professors I have ever had. He is passionate about his class and students. He actually cars about the time and effort you put into your papers and projects and is always free to talk after class. A wonderful teacher and a wonderful man. If you have the slightest interest in Anthropology take his class!

Wood is an incredible professor whose passion for anthropology is very apparent. The only issue you may have is that his instructions on assignments can sometimes be vague: don't sweat it, he won't use that against you. Show up, pay attention, take interest, and you'll do great.

One of the best professors anyone could ask for. As long as you are interested in reading and being part of a classroom environment that is fueled by discussion, his classes will easily become your favorite ones to attend. Outside of class he is very accessible and open to talking with students about ideas and assignments.

Great professor. You'd better be ready to read though. His readings are dense and long, but very helpful. Lots of people give him flack for this, but this is college, not high school. He's very helpful outside of class and very willing to talk things out. (Too, I've taken a few classes with him; not just one or two.)

Plays the 'favorite" game with students, picks his "pets" and they are the only ones that he lets speak in class, talks nothing about the class subject but more about his pompous self and will cut you off if he does not know how to answer your questions, way way too much reading, acts as if his class is the only one you are taking! Will never tak

Very chill prof. Kind, intelligent, and helpful. Great at explaining material. TONS of reading though (40 pgs per day or so) and ALL graded assignments are papers only. I took Zen Anth. It was more Zen and very little emphasis on anthropology, so beware of that. And he expects YOU to connect them; not him. A+ prof, but I'd give the class a C-.

Dr. Wood is an amazing, compassionate professor who grades fairly and expects students to be as involved in the course as he is. If he's busy, he can be a little abrupt, but no harm seems intended. He loves discussion and debate but if you are disrespectful to other students or constantly challenge him he will shut you down. A great, talented prof.

Expects too much in terms of reading and can be very rude outside of the classroom. I worked my butt off in his ANTH 100 class, reading everything twice and taking notes, and he decided he didn't like me by the time I was in Cultures of Africa. Once a teacher turns on a good student, its bad news.

John Wood is incredibly compassionate, intelligent, and humble. The work load's intensive if you don't like reading/writing. Take death/dying and/or manhood/masculinities if you're up for challenging, complexifying, and elucidating your ideas about life, self, culture, and so on. He's an amazing professor/human, and UNCA is so lucky to have him.

I cannot understand why others would have unkind words to say about John Wood. Calling John Wood pretentious is about as unfounded an accusation as I can conceive of. You will NOT find a more compassionate professor. Yes, the reading is heavy, but he compensates by explaining the material thoroughly. U is collidging now. Act like it, slackers!

John is a pretentious, over-rated man. The texts he choose were out of date. His manuscript made huge assumptions that are simply incorrect. The reading and writing load is excessive. He expects that you will devote about 10-15 hours a week for his class. fF you have learning or physical disabilities, STAY AWAY!

DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS IF YOU WANT TO HAVE ANY DOWN TIME! John assigns way too many readings and far too many papers. You know that expression, “You’ll have to treat this class as if it is the only one you’re taking.†He means it. He is pretentious, over-rated, and generally ridiculous.

A really good professor, he is genuinly concerned for his students, and is open minded when it comes to grading. The class was very interesting. The amount of work was apropriate. There was times though when I felt like he expected too much for an introductory class. I would probalby take him agian.
