Wright is difficult. We go over the readings and notes in great detail, but it can still be hard to follow. He gives you essays he grades them intensely. I received very low grades because I 'could not grasp the ideas'. He doesn't answer most questions clearly. He talks over other people. I would recommend a tutor if you have him as a professor.

Dr. Wright is difficult. If you enjoy philosophy and discussing the topics deeply, you'll enjoy the class, but don't take it if you're just looking to satisfy a U.P credit. He grades the two five-page essays very hard and will give you pop quizzes that aren't very easy. He also talks over people. But if you truly enjoy the subject, it's great.

If you're really interested in philosophy, you'll love this class. Otherwise, if you just want a UP credit, avoid it. 2 five page papers. Pop quizzes are awful, the quizzes themselves are hard as well. Not an easy A. He's a decent teacher, but he talks over people and rarely let's them finish talking. Overall, I would avoid.

Please participate in class! If you don't participate, you won't have as much fun. He loves to hear perspectives, and he will join a class debate. Also, don't come into this class with a closed mind. Forget about your beliefs and become a different person. He's one of the best professors with the most interesting subject to teach at CMU.

response to guy below- You shouldn't have a problem if you have REASONS for your beliefs. He doesn't have anything against beleivers he'll just point out the flaws in a poorly structured argument. Not any easy class. Pulled off an A- but I know the majority of my honors class did poorly. Take it if you enjoy debate and critical thinking.

Find a different class!,expect a pop quiz every class, which can be extremely wordy. 2 Essay's and attendance is the majority of the points. He grades the essay's extremely hard. Also will challenge your opinion everytime you speak up in class. Not an easy A

A lot of reading and a pop quiz everyday. Not an easy class at all. It does stir up good conversation though and can be fun. He is a good professor too. He does grade hard, and his quizzes are wordy. Overall, he does care about his students and loves to hear their opinions. This isnt the class to take if you need an A.

This class is extremely boring. I thought the class would be much more interesting than it was. When people give their opinions he usually tells you you're wrong, which is why I stopped talking. Nice guy and helpful if you ask for better explanations. Readings are extremely dry and you get a quiz every day.

This is by far, the most rewarding class I've ever taken. His lectures are thought provoking, thorough, and unbiased. Do NOT take this class if you're looking for an easy A. This class is for those who want to learn and think.

He's Weird, and needs to retire. Gets of track really easily an his notes are really disorganized. It's a frustrating class and he's a frustrating teacher. Chose someone else.

Such a great prof! he's so goofy, but at least he puts a pile of passion into his teaching! interesting class too, could usually stay focused the whole time. take him up on it when he offers to help you on your essay individually, helps a ton. but really, loved this class and prof.

If you're not interested and couldn't care less, please don't take philosophy classes, especially not with John Wright. He expects some interest, some drive, some motivation in your work (and your attitude). Show him you want to do well (go to class, do the reading, take notes, study, go to his office hours) and you WILL be fine.

Worst. Class. EVER. Do not take this class!!! He's a senile old man who is beyond retiring age. The 2nd day of class each student takes a chapter, and the students teach the entire class so he doesn't have to do any work.

Yuck. This guy is boring, hard, and makes his intro to philosophy course too hard for people who are just trying to get an overview. I dropped this class and went to Meixner for logic. Now that's an amazing class! Interesting, fun, and you learn a lot (I know, it's logic! Weird!) If you're a student who needs a logic class, drop this.

I LOVED this class, and prof Wright. He's so helpful and understanding. I missed a week of classes for a friend's funeral and he gave me a generous extension on my paper. He gives thoughtful feedback on assignments. As long as you show up on time and pay attention, you'll be fine.

Very passionate guy, even if he does look a bit turtley! Watch Master of Disguise with Dana Carvey before going to your first class with him. It will crack you up! But he's a very good professor. I wrote him an email when I was sick explaining why I wasn't in class and asked if he wanted me to email him my homework and his resonse was no homework w
