The professor is politically jejune, and her academic arguments are fairly unbalanced.

To be honest, some Sinology researchers can get faculty positions at prestigious universities in western countries, largely because their high level of competence in English is very helpful for them to interact closely with Western academic circles. But for the depth and breadth of research, many home-grown researchers are far superior to them.

She is amazing at making Taiwan history into a story for you to remember. Her story telling method made me intrigued enough to listen intently in class. I didn't crack open the txtbk at all as tests were lecture-based. No papers just tests which were easy if you took notes and listened in class. She is able to remember everyone's names!

Participation really matters in her class! Go to her lecture and you will do fine! She has every lecture memorized in her head, so she doesn't have any written down notes. However, she always repeats the important notes over and over again, so you cant miss the point. She has amazing memory! She remembers everyone's name in first couple weeks!

Chiu-Duke is a knowledgeable professor who is passionate about what she teaches. She doesn't use PowerPoints like most profs nowadays, and I think it actually helps her lectures be more engaging. Attendance is mandatory (she grades it), though it's also rewarding because if you pay attention to what she says it'll be very easy to do well.

The lectures are interesting but she expects you to have background knowledges. It is worth taking, but if she does not agree with your opinions, she would challenge you and that can turn out to be embarrassing.

Josephine is a very knowledgeable and engaging prof. She knows what she's talking about and she's not the kind of prof who will use boring PP slides and read off off them. Not too much workload and the subject is interesting. Would recommend this prof to anyone!

She is very knowledgable in her field of study. However, she is not the friendliest, she expects you to understand the readings word for word. Not helpful during her office hours as well. If you are VERY interested in her field of study then its worth taking but if you don't have much enthusiasm for Chinese history, avoid at all cost.

Saw some of the low ratings on previous reviews and really doubt the truthfulness in them. Many of them didn't even have any comments, so I wonder if the low ratings reflect the low grades they received. Dr. Chiu-Duke is an incredible professor. Not only does she know her stuff, she also put passion in her classes. I highly recommend her!

Shes a great prof and very knowledgable on the culture of Taiwan. Quite an easy course - midterm, small paper, and a final. Be sure to attend her classes cuz she does take attendance and her lectures are important. You could probably get by without reading the text and just writing down everything she saids in her lectures.

This prof is just a genuinely lovely woman. She knows the content inside and out and is as approachable as anyone you'll ever meet. She can lecture on and on at times but she always broadens your perspective on whatever topic it is you are learning about. She's very fair with tests and marking and can be incredibly funny at times. Take her courses!

it's in your interest to attend lectures, haven't written the final yet but if it's like the midterm then one can write it based almost exclusively on class notes... very helpful out of class and if you want to learn how to excel at research papers to sharpen critical thinking skills or for grad studies, she could be an assett
