Wish I was still at NYU so I could take more courses with Dr. Shimakawa. The readings are dense and numerous but she really walks you through them during the next class and you feel smart afterwards. Totally changed the way I look at gender and race!

Pretty chill professor. Assigned a fair amount of reading, but lectures go over most of the main ideas, and you probably don't need to do the readings to get an A

I hate taking the CORE classes, but she made it bearable and I actually enjoyed it. Super easy grader and not a lot of work at all. I don't know why she got such negative feedback in the past. I really recommend her class for the expressive culture requirement.

This class has the most unnecessary amount of work I've ever seen in my entire life, and yet none of it feels productive. Karen is very condescending and often yelled at students in lecture for no reason. This class makes me sad.

This class, by far, was the worst CORE class i have ever taken. The best grades I received were on essays i wrote the night before, on papers i didn't read. There is a LOT of work, and it all feels like a waste of time. This class only exists so that someone with a degree in "performance studies" has a job.

DO NOT waste your time with this class, unless all of the other core requirements are closed and don't fit your schedule. She is currently teaching at NYU and her criticism is not constructive and is more on the condescending side. Nothing's ever graded on time and she assigns up to 80 pages of reading per night. Waste of time and energy

Comment:
One of the worst classes I have ever taken. She's currently teaching at NYU as an Expressive Cultures: Performance teacher. The reading is long, dry, and utterly dense. She also assigns about 48 pages per night for reading. The class is terrible and a recitation is required. Such a waste of time and money.

I would never have become an activist in the API community had it not been for Professor Shimakawa. The reader that she put together for the class is extremely helpful. Must do the reading thoroughly to do well in her class.

Loved the class. The work was challenging and a lot of fun. In fact, I'm currently considering pursuing a legal career because of a lot of things that I learned in this class.

The assigned reading were ok, but her lectures were absolutely horrible. They were very disorganized which made them virtually impossible to follow. She would lecture on the history of drama bounceing from century to century and back again

Interesting class. But I think her lectures were useless(except for gathering material to be on her tests.) She assigns interesting reading so thats a plus.
