Excellent prof. Not an easy marker but more than fair, tells you EXACTLY what he wants. May seem aloof or arrogant to some, but as someone who was a tad shy once upon a time I can guarantee that's all he is. Approach or email him and you'll get a kind and straightforward answer. Tests and assignments are not a cakewalk but effort is rewarded.

Great prof, interesting and engaging. Take notes in his class, read the textbook, follow assignment instructions closely, and you will do just fine. Some people say his classes are too hard for 1st year, but he will prepare you for upper-level classes, and you will leave his class with a new wealth of knowledge. Highly recommended.

I took 111 and 112 from Prof Kawchuk and think that it is worth taking classes from him based on the knowledge you'll gain. Probably marks a touch on the hard side but would still recommend him.

Kawchuk is a very knowledgable and passionate prof. I enjoyed every class of his throughly. On the negative though, he is a very hard marker, read the text book! He expects a lot on essays, as a quick example, on the topic i chose to write i got an 80 and i tied for top mark on that one. High expectations! But recommended :)

I think Kawchuk's a perfectionist. On one hand he's a tough marker, asks detailed exam questions and is picky about things like word count. On the other hand, he is extremely conscientious and runs a well-organized course. Recommended. Pay attention to the detailed assignment instructions, he follows them closely when grading.

Karman is very difficult but very knowledgeable. I found that he expected us to have alot of previous understanding to the content and so the expectations were very high for an introductory course. He is nice and approachable but he is a very hard marker. This class takes alot of time and dedication to get a good mark. Too much reading!

A tough prof but only because he wants his students to learn. He uses the Socratic method of teaching, which means there is lots of class discussion, and it forces you to read the texts. He is always willing to discuss things with students. The class takes a lot of work but if you're willing to take it on and learn lots then go for it!

Incredibly difficult prof, but really good. Not sure why everyone expects a first year class to be easy, that's when they weed out everyone who shouldn't be there. If you ask for help, he's more than willing, and doesn't try and hide that his class is HARD. Mostly based on the readings, so make sure they're done!

Just Ridiculous, he's far too hard, he's clearly got a chip on his shoulder and takes it out on students.

Boo on Kawchuk. Hard to understand, extemely boring, hard assignments, hard exams. Takes attendance every class, marks you on participation. Way too difficult for a first year class. STAY AWAY from this class!!

Asked for a lot considering it is a first year class. Multiple choice questions were quite specific. Very different style of assignments that are more time consuming than most. Explains what he is looking for in assignments and tells you what is expected of you.If you are a Political Studies major I recommend taking him if not stay away.

If you are a first year student looking to take some electives do not, and i mean do not take this class if you are not a genius in political studies already. Its all around boring, it was my hardest final, and this class brought my avg down. AVOID THIS CLASS!

Could have been an interesting class but he makes the class dreadful. He goes to the extreme on every little detail and if you mess it up even a little bit, well you can say goodbye to doing well in his class. Avoid at all cost.

I took POLS 111 from him. Not great, but not bad. He's a tough marker, and the multiple choice on his exams is killer. He takes attendance and part of your grade does come from that, as well as from participation.. so if you're one who likes to listen and not participate, like me, don't take his class.

Teaches Democracy in North America, an excellent course, Power point usage a awesome bonus, clear and concise, enjoys his "tough but fair" motto a little bit too much. I wrote a paper I felt was great and I only recieved a 75% -wasn't impressed with that he only docked me minor grammer errors. However cleaned house on exams&Participation.Good Prof!

Hes a great prof, makes the class interesting, attendance & participations recorded , so as long as you always ask a question here and there , whether its something stupid and off topic like mine usually is he still marks it down, (or for me he probably pretends too) but I'm in engineering and i thought this was my best class so far, marks fair too

There are better teachers in the department, I would avoid this one if you can. He is not easily approachable, he kind of comes off as arrogant, and does not speak to most students as adults, let alone equals. My first assignment predicted my final grade - not nice to know that you cannot improve your mark even by getting and using his own advice.
