Comment:
Dr Oths is great for Med Anth students. Any class taken with her will be worth the work. 411 requires LOTS of reading, some of which is unnecessary. Many times, she uses 4 articles to convey a point that 1 would have made. She is generous to the students who show they are putting in the effort. If you read and participate, the tests won't be bad.

This is the first time I have taken a class and felt that the workload was unreasonable. That being said, the material is generally interesting and you will learn a lot. Dr. Oths is a good lecturer and very knowledgeable.

This is the first ever class I've taken in college that I thought assigned an unreasonable amount of homework. That being said, the readings were generally interesting and the topics important. I liked this class despite how intimidating it was and I think I would take it again. Just not for the faint of heart.

Oths is a bright cultural anthropologist, fighter for disadvantaged groups, and awesome teacher! She's initially intimidating but fair and merciful if you work hard. Expect to read A LOT but also learn A LOT. Some of the most passionate and enlightening discussion I had in college were in her classes. No tests. Discussion + papers = whole grade.

Dr. Oths is not as bad as I had heard, in fact I really enjoyed her. Unless you are really interested in Anthropology, this class is going to be pretty boring though. It's a typical 100 level intro course: No papers, multiple choice tests, easy sections, and extra credit opportunities! No excuse to not get at least a B.

Easiest class i have ever taken in my life. Dr. Oths is nice, but this is still pretty boring if you don't care. Also, Dr. Oths seems 100% convinced that global warming is what destroyed civilization on Easter Island, even though she said (and other sources say) it was because they consumed their resources. The subject is also incredibly biased.

Dr.Oths is, in my opinion a very nice lady and well qualified to work in the field. But as a teacher, she doesn't seem to show any interest at all in making the class a better experience for her students. She does the same thing every class and really only pays attention to the class when they "distract her". Avoid if you aren't a diehard Ant kid.

She is very dry and boring. I am an anthropology major and love the subject but she somehow manages to put me to sleep every class. she makes a cool topic unbearably boring

Although the subject is interesting this woman is impossible to pay attention to. I read the book and I took notes but with the incredible amounts of material covered in between tests there is no hope to learn it all. Plus the tests are evil and most people fail or get a C if lucky. AVOID OTHS. good luck with other profs!

Dr. Oths was a horrible teacher! I had her for ANT102 and she made something I was interested in boring. She could never get the computers to work, and was not helpful outside of class. The only good part about taking the class was going to sections, where I'm pretty sure my Grad Student TA knew much more than the actual professor.

Dr. Oths is a really boring teacher. The material covered is interesting stuff, but she doesn't make the learning experience fun. She as a really monotone voice that put me to sleep! Her tests are all multiple choice, and if you don't read the book you'll get a C at best. There's lots of reading required and if you don't go to class you're screwed!

While Dr. Oths may be highly qualified in her field, her teaching abilities are mediocre at best. Her lectures are boring and her voice is, at best, annoying. I highly recommend NOT taking a class with Dr. Oths, if at all possible.

I just completed grad school and Dr. Oths is still the worst instructor I've ever had. She inserted her opinions throughout lectures regardless if they were relevant. Especially beware if you are not an ANT major or have religious beliefs that contridict evolution theories.

I've had a couple of classes with Oths and had her on committees to review my work. She is tough--hello, this is graduate school and you signed up for it. Her Methods class is right on and I got thousands of dollars in grant money to prove it. To the person who rated Ant. professors on 03/07/05: glad you're out of the program.

Anyone who doesn't like methods is a wimpy idiot. She is a good teacher who does the right thing for most students even if they are too dim to see it. All hetero male students think she's pretty hoy too.

Dr. Oths can seem intimidating, but I think she is simply being professional. Her classes are informative and interesting. Take ex. cred. opportunities when you get them. Write fast during the lectures; she moves quickly. Turn your phone off b/c it is a HUGE pet peeve of hers, and she'll point you out. Try to read the book/materials before class. It will give you an edge. You have to work at this class. A lot of theory before you get into actual cultures. Apply yourself and you'll get an A, no prob.
