Very knowledgeable although his accent is pretty thick. However, his handouts are very helpful and he has no problem repeating himself if you don't understand right away. He's a good teacher. Just make sure you do the homework (there's not much) since it's the best way to practice for his test. He tells you EXACTLY what is going to be on the exams.

Personally, I dislike his teaching style. For the most part he reads off of his handouts in a dry and heavy accented voice. He is good at what he does; however, I do not recommend his class to anyone unless you have to take it, and then I would suggest trying to get a different professor.

Very nice teacher! He understands that his subject isn't the most exciting and that not a lot of students have a passion for it, so he tries to make it as easy on students as possible. There's only 4 homework assignments the whole quarter, and four tests, including the midterm and final. Super easy class if you understand the material.

He is a nice guy. The thing is its hard to understand with his thick accent. He definitely knows his subject but he does not know how to explain it. He doesn't give many examples and the homework doesn't give you much practice to understanding it.

I've taken several classes by Dr Zoe and I highly recommend him. He's helpful and skipping class won't hurt your grade. Handouts are very clear, and the exams have no surprises. He gives you clear study guides and does reviews before exams.

This professor made a difficult subject even more difficult. He does not answer questions clearly, has a very dry teaching style, and not only gives difficult tests but gives test more difficult than the material in class. Unless you are very confident in your Grammar ability and don't mind teaching yourself through handouts, I would NOT recommend

English is not supposed to be taught like a math class or turned into one. How about looking at the work someone has put in instead of grading based on own percentage grading system. This makes it so many people don't pass.

Oh wow. I am taking a W because Zou is the single worst teacher I've ever had. Takes a complicated and technical subject like linguistics and renders it into a calculus class. Seems to care more about his job than reaching his students. AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE!

Dr. Zou has a pretty thick accent and is a bit hard to understand. But, his handouts are self explanatory and you find it's easy enough to follow along. While he's a solid prof. he has a hard time explaining things in different ways to help you learn and will often just repeat himself, asking, "Clear?" An easy enough class with medium effort.

Grammar in his course is taught like a science. His lecturing style can at times be a bit boring. He's clear, precise and very helpful. All around nice guy. Doesn't even grade the homework. A letter grade of B is almost certainly promised as long as you study a bit.

Makes the class entertaining. Usually very clear in his lectures... Lots of practice for clarity. However, if you have a question, make sure you word it so that it is VERY clear when you ask. Otherwise, he assumes he knows what you're asking, and often cuts you off. Tends to repeat "Is the what?" a lot... very annoying.

Professor Zoe is amazing. He knows everything there is to know about English grammar and can answer any question at the drop of a hat.The class requires thought and studying but if you're willing to do the work, he is willing to teach. Many complain his accent is difficult to comprehend but teachers with heavy accents is nothing new for me.

Class is extremely boring. If you ask questions he likes to mention the fact that he's gone over the subject matter and wonders why you dont get it. His accent can be a bit hard to understand at times. He stresses every little part when you ask him about something. You have a problem with one thing? He'll explain allllll of it -unnecessary!!

The class was boring but i found it very hard to understand what he was saying. His accent is strong. At times I found myself trying to figure out what he was saying. He know his material but communicating it to others is where the problem comes in.

Class is boring. I mean seriously BOOORING. He's difficult to understand, never gives you a break in longer classes, is constantly doing exercises out of the text book... I never showed. However, you can print up his lectures which are actually quite thorough and you will do fine on the tests. Nice guy too.

Mr. Zou is a very nice man and I'm sure he knows his stuff...but he is very hard to understand. He doesn't communicate very well. Whenever asked a question his standard reply "we went over this" which is not very helpful.

Answer me this: Why on EARTH would a man still struggling to formulate coherent sentences in English; grasping vocabulary and the logistics of everyday talk--be allowed to teach an upper-division ENGLISH GRAMMAR CLASS?! That aside, the class is very easy if you just attend.

I had a hard time understanding Professor Zou because of his accent. If you're already comfortable with a strong Chinese accent, or if you think you'll enjoy the challenge of understanding someone with a strong Chinese accent, take this class. His lectures follow the handouts, and the handouts helped me figure out what he was saying.
