Comment:

Took her for both entry levels of Japanese language and she is an excellent teacher. She takes time to help her students inside and outside of class and never provides tests or assignments that are unfair, always covering only the material covered in class. If you take entry level Japanese, take it with Ota-Sensei.

Comment:

Ota Sensei is nice, though sometimes her English isn't good enough to understand some of our questions. Attandance worths 10%, 1 absence -1%. Other than these she's an easy marker and she's very kind to every student. Exercises she gave were very effective. I'm taking her 238 now.

Comment:

Ota-sensei is a kind, sweet and patient lady. Her lectures are somewhat sporadic and she would trail off in a different subject. This class is a double credit course. So expect to work and study. 8 chapters to cover. 1-4 are easiest. 5-8 are the toughest. Advice. Focus on Grammar and Vocabulary. DON'T FALL BEHIND IN KANJI COME TO CLASS for mark

This was an insanely intense course. I'm glad I did it, but I would definitely not take it again (especially if youre taking 5 classes). She was so helpful, and so encouraging, and hilarious! You can tell she's been teaching for years because she knows exactly how to make new grammar points really clear. I love her!

well, what can I say, DONT MISS ANY LECTURES !!!!!! since it's a double credit course, there are A LOT OF things you need to learn by yourself. lecture will only cover very limited amount of knowledge. most of things you need to learn by yourself and MEMORIZE (what do you expect, it's a language course). ota sensei is good overall. tough though.

Tough class and tough prof, but Ota is hands down the best prof I've had for learning a language. Be on time and don't miss class not because Ota a will single you out like other reviews say, but because she wants you to succeed! This is a beginner class so yes she doesn't like people going ahead or suck ups (weeaboos). Study hard and have fun!

She is energetic for sure..but the class was a bit dry. NEVER late for the class, otherwise she would pick on you in front of the class. If you have basic Japanese background, the class is easy. But a lot of work to do. if you pick this prof, remember..ATTANDANCE is must and BE ON TIME is her priority.

She is amazing! So helpful and kind and wants you to do well! Always takes extra time for you if you need it. It is a tough course though, with lots of work and time needed to do well, but if you put in the effort you will be fine!

Loved her. She is very helpful if you're struggling and very engaging. She will talk to you if you miss classes but it is simply because she cares about her students and their grades. She's also very funny and not too intimidating. Ota is my favorite professor at Uvic and given the choice I'd never take Japanese with any other instructor but her.

Really needs to learn how to be more professional. I wasn't one of the unfortunate, but I noticed a lot that she targeted students that either struggled or went ahead of her class. If you take this class, try not to attract attention to yourself. Good thing I got an A. Never taking her class again.

There's no doubt that she knows her material inside and out but she expects you to too. Not to say the class couldn't be interesting but it seems she goes out of her way to make the material esoteric and irrelevant.

Great prof! Always looked forward to this class, was loads of fun and Oota sensei is hilarious. Be prepared to work hard, but she is very helpful if you ask questions and she answers email very quickly. If I had space in my program, I would definitely take PAAS 131 with Oota sensei.

Good teacher, unless she doesn't like you. She'll target students. Teaches well, but picks on the students she doesn't like all the time. If you take her class, be the biggest suck-up you can ever be. Don't ever use advanced Japanese or she'll hate you. She can be nice sometimes, but so fake. I dreaded class time.

I'll admit she's a good teacher, but I've never met a teacher who doesn't want students to go ahead of the class. She hates it when students use advanced Japanese. She also tends to target students by constantly picking on them and acting like they're failing the class when they're not. So yes, she is good to learn from, but a little uptight.
