One of the best ancien regime Professors I have seen in Europe, the US and the former Soviet Union, quite helpful for real personalities but dangerous for the provincial vanity of jerks.

I had this guy back at UT-Austin in 1970. Everything said by everybody here, about his class and himself, was spot on back then. The man is indeed an a** who will introduce you to a world of learning you won't find elsewhere. I'm still working on stuff he pushed me to back then. Good luck, and maybe heed Dante's famous sign of warning!

unnecessarily condescending, difficult, and mean- publically humiliates you with mild irony, like that makes it better; knows his stuff, but in my opinion didn't encourage any sort of enthusiam for learning... would ask questions that had nothing to do with Mod Italian Hist and if we didn't know it we were stupid Americans. Still here b/c of tenure

If you are looking for an easy A, do not take a class with Botsford. However, if you want to enjoy a class and enjoy spending time in that class, you will love Botsford. He gives you a completely different spin on everything you think you know and really challenges you to challenge to status quo. He also has a great sense of humor!

I found Botsford to be incredibly unprofessional. He moved the class from its assigned room to his office so he could smoke during the class, despite the fact that a couple of us were asthmatic or allergic to smoke. His pigheaded inability to accept anyone else's opinion or knowledge created a stifling, and offensive, class environment. I'd avoid!

okay. so he IS a total jerk and bragger. but he is perhaps my favorite professor of all time - simply because what he taught me has stuck with me and has proven handy time and time again. he's not afraid to tell you when you suck. and because he's such a **** the last thing you want to do is let him be right. he pushed and i learned. just don't be afraid of him. be a **** right back at him. he'll respect you more for it.

Worst professor ever! He's very high on himself, and talks about how fantastic he is all the time. He's unhelpful and not interested in his students at all. I highly recommend avoiding this class and this professor.

Botsford thinks he's god's gift-he's not. He is scattered,talks about himself and his personal life (including sex) constantly-an old man who has no interest in his students, never responds to questio- he should not be allowed to teach- i've never seen so many journalism majors drop a required class

Don't be fooled by what he says. The class isnt' that hard and he gives extensions. The midterm is impossible but the grade doesn't count for much. Just learn to be ammused with what he says in class, cause not many history classes use only one book.
