Rambles in lecture, does not make content interesting. Extremely opinionated and isn't afraid to offend anyone by somewhat aggressively sharing opinions. Quizzes often filled with trick questions. Can get a decent grade if you pay attention and write down what he repeats a lot in class.

Classes are EXTREMELY boring but not mandatory. He is very understanding. If you ask him for an extension on a paper, he will give it to you. He also lets you redo your paper if you don't like your grade. His quizzes are hard and he grades roughly. However, he is an easy going guy. He gives you an optional paper which could help grades.

Probably the most boring / useless class someone can ever take. Tons of take home quizzes based off of readings and 2 essays (out of class) and a final. Super boring but you won't get a bad grade.

he was a sweet guy but i didnt like how he just reread whatever our homework was, you have to buy about 7 books short cheap novels the essays can be confusing and quizzes challenging but if you go to his office hours & respect him youll get a good grade. i read summaries of the books & talked to him a lot so he saw i was trying and bumped my grade

Three papers and he does not grade leniently. All the quizzes a take home. Doesn't use canvas at all so your grade is a total surprise at the end of the semester.

Kevin Harter is an... interesting person. He is pretty humorous and can get sidetracked easily by things like politics and raccoons. You'll want to keep up with the reading or at least find summaries. Most of the books are interesting but some arereally hard to get through. The criteria for the essays is almost nonexistent. Quizzes aren't terrible.

Harter is a great guy! Definitely the easier route to take for the english cluster. Make sure you read or at least use online summaries to keep up. The books are pretty interesting. And go to his office hours--it helps so much. if he knows your name and that you care about the class, you will do well!

Kevin is a great dude & I would highly recommend taking his class instead of an awful GENG class. By far the chillest, most relaxed teacher I've had at JMU, but I could tell a lot of students undervalued him cause he's kind of a quirky, misunderstood guy at times. PARTICIPATE IN CLASS! It'll make the time go by much faster & Kevin will like you

This is the best teacher/class combination for this cluster by far! The only way to do poorly in this class is to not turn in your papers.

Harter is a really cool guy! The class is pretty boring and involves a lot of reading, but even if you only look up summaries you can still do ok. His quizzes seem hard at first, but they're all take home and he gives answers to some questions in class if you ask him too. Also he's really flexible with due dates. Take GHUM with Harter if you can!

Harter is a character. He loves what he teaches, but is often side-tracked by things going on in his personal life. Dont let that stop you from taking his class though! Lecture can be dry, but the more you interact, the better the class! If you get to know him and show him that you care, he will give you the grade you deserve.

Pretty easy class. Didn't do all of the reading, but he's super understanding and will help you out along the way. Harter is the kind of guy you'd like to kick back and have a beer with. Ask him about his raccoons. I would definitely recommend this class to friends. Be open - the more you interact with him the better the class is.

Super boring class..he basically just rambles about each book. i suggest just bringing your laptop and doing other work. but it's not a stressful class. most of the quizzes are take home and true/false and there's 2 papers and a final paper. would recommend if you don't mind sitting through a boring lecture

Harter is such a nice guy and willing to help anyone who is willing to try. He loves to get to know the students and loves if you talk during class. He often goes off on tangents and some of the books are hard to follow but he will answer any questions in class. Not too hard of a class. Take him!! Really willing to help!

He assigns alot of reading...don't worry about doing any of it. If you go to class, everything is covered. And if you take good notes, the papers pretty much write themselves, just type of his analysis. Go to office hours so he knows who you are, talk to him about life. Very laid back and he is really smart, but gets off topic easily.

Easiest english teacher you can take. I never went to class because everything was take home: papers, quizzes and the "final". He only makes you write 3 papers and they are all super easy. I didn't read a single one of the books. All he does in class is ramble and talk about bigfoot, so I could not recommend going. Take him!

Harter is the man! If you go to his office hours and build a repertoire with him, it is easy to do well in the course. He goes on tangents and can get really off topic, but its pretty interesting to listen to if you choose to.

This guy is super nice, friendly, and even though he goes on tangents in class, interesting to listen to. Grades easily, and you can tell he isn't too concerned with the grades really. If he sees you are trying, you'll pass. Great dude overall.

Everything you do for this class is at home. I went to his class everyday (which I found out wasn't even necessary), did not listen to a thing he said, but all the quizzes/papers were take home so I just looked up everything online. I bought the first book at the beginning of the semester, never bought another book after that and got an A.
