Jane Austen class is one of the most fun classes I've ever taken. Participation is super big for this class, so be prepared to contribute for a good grade, but it's Austen? The BEST. We watched movie clips, read and discussed the books... all around just great. Hutchings is so passionate about it, and that makes it even better. Take this class!

Pros:Very nice person. Enthusiastic. He doesn't mind if you use first person. Cons:I found his expectations very high. This was one of the most difficult courses I have taken. Also some times the grading criteria are vague and it can be frustrating to receive a paper where you lose marks for something you didn't know you were supposed to include.

Dr. Hutchings is an excellent prof with a passion for what he teaches. He is always willing to help and is super available to his students. That being said, he marks way too hard- definitely take advantage of his office hours.

A wonderful person, he genuinely wants his students to do well and has their best interests at heart. He is so easy to communicate with her and to meet for office hours to go over material. Incredibly helpful and caring, even if the material is hard, he makes it bearable.

Survey classes are generally awful, but Hutchings makes this bearable. You learn a lot and his enthusiasm helps keep the lectures moving and interesting. However, his final for this class was unnecessarily long and painful. He required too much for the time allotted. Put aside A LOT of time to study, because you will be writing like the wind.

Kevin is a great prof. I wasn't looking forward to taking English but with his enthusiasm it made the class very interesting. Fairly easy class if you show up as all of the notes you need he only gives in class. He was always always willing to help. And he even performed in class a few times. Would recommend to anyone.

Hutchings is such an amazing prof! He is smart, passionate and will challenge you to become a better student. He is a tough marker, but very fair. He is also INCREDIBLY helpful for any of the assignments. Participation is his biggest thing, but he is so into what he teaches, that it's easy to jump into discussion. One of the best profs UNBC has!

Hutchings is one of the best professors I could ever dream of having. Whether you like the Romantic Era or not, you'll respect it by the end of the class. Hutchings is passionate about what he teaches, thoughtful in the way he handles discussions and he completely gets what it is to be a student. He pushes you to become a better literary historian.

I took two romantic literature classes with him (483&383), which is his specialty. He is the BEST English prof at UNBC, not an easy marker, and he takes attendance and participation. The class is well-organized, clear, and straight-forward. You will learn and gain A LOT. I recommend English majors to go to his classes, you won't be disappointed!

He's awesome, plain and simple. Loves the material, knows his stuff and really encourages participation. Only way to really do bad is to not attend class or put 0 effort into your essays. Definitely take a class with him.
