Tests are nearly impossible. You better devote all your time to this class, or be a natural genius. There were 45 students in Shand's Fall '07, and 8 made it through. Any curving? Nope. You need 65 to get a C+ (to continue in the acturial stream). Good luck! Textbook is pretty useless since Shand just makes up questions that are 100 times harder.

A good guy, really cares about his students and tries to do as much for you as he can. That said, his test are nearly impossible and he even admits it. You can rattle off every SOA question from the past 10 years and still have no idea with some of the stuff he throws out

Tests in Pension were impossibly long. Two of the four tests have an average of 50% and this is a 4th year class. Gave out an extra assignment that just skewed marks to those who worked in groups. Nice guy just the grading system was way off. His examples that are meant to help with the tests are much too basic to be of any help at all.

Definitely have his own style. Great prof, some people think his class is hard. Actually, if learned material before hand, he explain things very well. He is one of those profs that really knows what they are teaching.

Yes, he's hot. Great prof, notes are well organized. Force you to work really hard for his course and SoA course. Exams are really really STIMULATING!!
