Comment:
Dr. Longley is truly an impressive professor. However, his courses are extremely reading heavy, and demand a lot of work. (Think upwards of 100+ pgs of reading per week). Despite the heavy reading load, the lectures Dr. Longley gives are great and you are guaranteed to learn a lot. He respects his students, especially if you participate in class.

Initially I was scared to take Dr. Longley because of his negative reviews. Although, I ended up loving his class. He is a great professor, who always makes his student feel respected and significant. He is very thought provoking and that is his main goal. There is some reading and tests, but as long as you read and do your work you will do great.

Ridiculously hard mode, that's how can I describe it. Great lecture but the tests, exams, even quiz are designed to have you memorize the very very little thing from what you read. Crazy but useful class.

Comment:
Enjoyed the material for HST340, hated the workload and lack of direction or feedback. Did about 20hours of solid reading per week for a semester, the tests were novels and always on the most obscure topics in the reading. Even after asking for feedback on assignments that I kept getting low grades on I was told to full answer the question.

Overall very productive course. Lots of material and reading, but very thought provoking. professor Longley was very open to opinions as long as you backed up your answer. Just do the readings and you'll have a great class.

Overall great course, and Professor Longley was fairly consistent in his grading. Compared to other professors I've had he returned grades quickly. Yes, there is a lot of reading for this course but that should be expected. Read the material, keep up with due dates and you'll do just fine.

I've taken several American History classes at ASU and there was none that I enjoyed more than this one. Professor Longely constantly challenged us to think critically and helped make this subject fascinating. If you're truly passionate about American History you must take this class!

Professor Longely was an excellent professor and a great resource. Not only did we learn the material that we were assigned, he actually went over essays we had written and tried to make the class really teach us about real world information. The class was alot of work, but it was worth every minute.

Didn't order books through the ASU bookstore so we didn't know what they were or where to get them till class already started. Constantly having to adjust things he should've explained earlier, confusing. Seemed distracted by other classes he had. Slow at grading. Extremely unrealistic workload. Seemed like the teaching assistant did all his work.

Prof. Longley is not very organized with content, a bit egotistical, and doesn't have clear expectations. It was an online course and required reading TONS of academic essays, which are difficult & time consuming. No lectures available to watch/listen, all reading & time consuming homework. I learned quite a bit but did well over 20hrs/wk of work

Overall this class wasn't bad, prof. Longley really wants the students to understand the material and leave this class with knowledge, he does care. However the work load is crazy! 15-20 IDs, 19 short answer, an essay outline and 2 in depth, long DBQs a week!! If this is your only class, or can handle the workload, take it.

Extremely demanding teacher. I have never experienced a teacher giving this much busy work, or required you to read as much as he does. Several hundred pages required each week. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!

Unbelievable. The amount of work that is required to even stay afloat in his class is ridiculous. 6 books (All of them you WILL READ and be tested on), hundreds of pages of reading a WEEK! If you are taking any other upper division classes DO NOT take this one. Longley is a VERY demanding instructor. Good luck, you'll need it.

Tons of reading, 4 books as well as the text itself crammed into 8 week accelerated class. Weekly 9 page outlines, discussions that are more like essays along with responses. TA is the only one you will ever hear from. Did everything on time and more than expected, managed an A in HST 101 previous 8 weeks, expectations are ridiculous. Stay Away!

What a terrible teacher. He didn't post any announcements the whole semester basically. He doesn't help the students when they email him, and responds very rudely. He basically made the class much harder than it needed to be, and took away from the fun of learning history. Also the TA was trash as well. He doesn't know how to make a quiz either.

He is a great teacher everything is understandable no confusion, just a lot of reading. you really need to stay on top of it or you will fall behind. it is not the type of reading you can get done the night before class. If you have a lot of time take him if not maybe a different teacher.

This was a class that was supposed to be a Qualitative Methods class in International Relations. The class could have been more appropriately titled "History of US Foreign Policy." It was misleading, the professor was unresponsive to class concerns (although, in his defense, he did hold regular office hours) and the class was, more or less, a bust
