Good lab instructor. The last lab exam is tough if you didn't do the dissections of rat and quail in class

Laurie is a gentle, kind, passionate person. If you ask her questions, and stay to the end of the lab, she will help you; she is always happy to help students. Her exams are pretty tough, and I suggest that she adds more space -- she requires a lot of detail. I enjoy Laurie as a person and teacher. The exams were very hard. Details key!

I really enjoyed Laurie's labs. Yes, she's detail-oriented and demanding in exams, but guess what? That's science. If you actually complete all your labs (yes, that means homework, not just lab work) and ask her about anything you don't understand, you'll see the results in your marks. I can't fathom anyone calling this gentle human mean!

First of all she is not mean. I'm not sure if there are other same teacher named Laurie Parkinson, but she is rather nice to her students. She is always willing to help her students out if they have any problems. And her tests are not super hard. Yes there are tricky questions but those can be answered if you have studied enough.

Comment:
Some of these ratings/comments don't do justice for Laurie. Sure she may be a more old-fashioned and wants lab exams to be written with as much detail and accuracy as possible; however the marks are a clear reflection of how you grasped the material and how organized you are. Prepare ahead, make good use of lab time, and just put in the effort.

When writing exams, write as detailed as possible. Show that you've really studied and understand the material. She deducts 0.25 or 0.5 points for every detail you miss.

A lot of these comments are very biased! Honestly, Laurie will be able to tell when you put the effort into the labs and will be more than willing to help answer any questions that you have if you approach her and ask! :) If you take the course serious and start studying for the lab exam early on, then you'll be just fine!

If you understand what is going on in the lab, you are going to do fine with Laurie. If you don't understand what is going on, she will help you (so long as you ask). For those who are looking at these reviews, keep in mind that ~75% of students do very poorly in the lab. Most of the negativity in these reviews is a likely to be a reaction to that.

She's helpful and everything else you would want in a lab instructor. Her exams are easy... But she does have stringent standards. I've never taken biology before and I managed an A- on the first exam (I'm about to write the second one).

I thought these comments were a little biased until I myself have personally experience the horror of this lady. EXTREMELY HARD MARKER EVEN THOUGH YOU GO IT RIGHT!! I had 89 percent average on the lecture, but because of her labs, I ended up getting a c- average. Words cannot describe my frustration for this insane lady!

She's a nice person, actually, but that is, only if you ask her a lot of good questions. Her tests are extremely hard though, and it's near impossible to get an A They're all about the littlest details. If you ask for help on a test, she says, "You're supposed to know this...I can't help you, sorry". Dropping the course recommended.

I really liked Laurie as a lab demo, don't know why others didn't -- yes, you have to do the work, but really, is that too much to ask?

Very bad lab instructor. she will lower you GPA for sure. Her exams are near impossible to get an A. Many students failed her exams. NOT A GOOD TEACHER, AND DOES NOT CARE ABOUT THE STUDENTS WELL BEING.

I will have to agree with many of the ratings here because she truly is the most horrible and rudest lab professor I had ever had. She's not encouraging and she seems to get a pleasure when students suffer. She is also very rude when I approach her. If she is designated to be your lab teacher, then, my advice is to withdraw ASAP or your GPA fall.

Worst lab teacher in Langara ever. She is the toughest lab teacher in the school. The way she marks lab exam are just so pathetic. Marks it wrong even though if you got the right answer. I have been in Langara for many years, and out of my experience, she is the cruelest most difficult instructor ever! Too bad we can't choose lab proffs in Langara.

I was getting an A in the lecture portion of BIOL until she screwed me over with her "ridiculous" lab exam. I had to withdraw even though I was doing so well in BIOL. If you Come to her office with a question, you will leave her office with a question mark on your head. NOT HELPFUL. very unclear when explaining materials. VERY VERY RUDE INSTRUCTOR.
