Scalet is a great guy, and it's a shame that he left. He spurred interesting discussion that was only loosely related to the text, yet I always felt prepared when the test came around. He is a fair professor and will help with anything if you meet him in office hours. Generally an interesting guy, well articulated, and pretty fun as well.

Awesome teacher and awesome class. Very interesting stuff from beginning to the end. The tests are a bit hard, but I'm pretty sure he curves. Most of the class was kids debating their opinions. Not many notes. Scalet is also good because he doesn't have, or at least make obvious, his political bias. Shows both sides and lets students debate.

Wonderful teacher; loves academia and philosophy. Always looking to help students learn. Only criticism is that he often teaches to the worst students in the class, not the best.

Passionate and intelligent. Spurs conversation and makes students think. Doesn't hurt you for not attending class but you pretty much have to in order to get a good grade as there is no textbook. Class is interesting and enjoyable. Tests test knowledge/understanding of material as opposed to ability to test/study well.

Warm, human, very helpful. High standards in his class, though. Tough for freshman.Passionate about the topic and tries hard to get students interested. Worked for me.

he's a good professor, but you need to remember absolutely everything he says! very big on attendance, seems to take it personally if you don't show. very good at explaining things, really knows the material, but seems to pick THE ABSOLUTE WORST TAS EVER. however, if you go to him for help he will be more than happy to help you out. nice guy.

Very clear in his teachings. Very well thought out debates, arguments and explanations. His class is good for you IF you like logics and phil. stuff. Don't take it if you're not in anyway interested in a bogged mind. Reading are kind of complex. Debates interesting.

Not advised for first year students. If you have a good TA, you're in luck. If you have a bad TA or a TA who's never taken the course, then it really sucks. The tests are impossible to get an A on, but I've seen one. Assigned seats in lecture, and go to every lecture, b/c you will get 5 points added to your last exam. Trust me, it's worth it.

Meh. This class is surprisingly challenging. Your success REALLY depends on your TA--some are very helpful and knowledgeable, others are NOT. If you are in the "NOT" section, you are at a disadvantage because exams are graded based on the bell curve, so you have to be the BEST to get a high grade. I didn't care for Scalet, though he is very nice.

Great guy and an amaxzing speaker! Very easy to understand and has a natural love for what he teaches. He really makes you think about the world and provides a basis and vocabulary to speak intelligently on important issues in today's world. Exams are fair- grading scheme not so hot- very frustrating as each TA grades a different question- appeal!

Scalet's the man. Got me thinking after every lecture. Really clear in lecture. Readings seem to just around in circles...but you'll understand them like 90% at least with his explanations.

scalet is the man. TA's take attendance in lecture so you have to go but the material is very interesting. small quizzes every week in section but if you did the reading you will ace it. class is real easy if you do what scalet asks of you but if you dont its your loss anyway.

Professor Scalet is friendly and helpful outside of class. His TA's are not clear or helpful. His lectures are informative, but dry, he seems to be afraid of public speaking, has an uncomfortable giggle when he laughs at a joke.

Here's my experience. My TA was not very good at all. Scalet's lectures are good, however he was unable to keep this one annoying student quiet. I did all of the readings where as my friend did none and still performed better than me on the tests. There is no paper in this class which hurt me. I would warn anyone thinking about taking this class.

This class was a joke. He assigns tons of readings and homework, yet often he waits until a day or two before it's due to update his website with the details (which he posts the assignments on). He's a horrible lecturer. Often students ask questions and he will not answer them. Tests are super hard. Stay away from this class unless it's required.
