Lets just put it this way---he made an 8am class lively and interesting. I'm not Canadian, nor am I into literature, but somehow I came to really appreciate this class. He's honest and has a great sense of humor. Just make sure you do the readings and participate, and you'll get a good grade.

Had him for both CDN Lit and poetry. He is hands down one of the best, if not THE best professor I've had in my univ. career. Attendance is crucial and beneficial, because he's hilarious, genuine and thoughtfully intelligent. And yes, even at 8am. His term project (no papers!) is unique and really interesting and requires a lot of introspection.

Totally great prof. Got a little bit overly sentimental at times, but you could tell it was just because he really liked the content. He's a hilarious guy, and never makes you feel silly. You can tell him when you haven't done the reading, and he'll still manage to find a way to get you to answer a question. Take his class, even if it's at 8am!!!!!

One of the best teachers I have ever had! For an 8am class, it was fun, I laughed until I cried (a few times), and Ricou is a great prof. Attendance is crutial to success. He's retiring soon so hurry up and take this class!

You do a work book in this class. It has overtones of highschool all over the damn thing, however, it is still an interesting medium of expression. He also set up interesting discussions, if you did the readings.

Laurie is one of those teachers that demand thought from the class, and gets it. He gives you a reason to come to class at 8am, and reminds you too. He even got a little emotional at the end of the term, which was heartwarming to see in a prof. He is a special breed at UBC. wish there were more like him.

The unorthodox course format works very well. I walked into class disinterested and I leave the class pretty inspired. Ricou is warm, intelligent, funny and respectful of his studets - just attend class, speak up, and treat his wordbook assignment seriously.

Great! and I'm not even a morning person! He's funny and interesting and will push you to learn (maybe even literally). We had a class filled with wonderful people, singing, and dancing. What more could you want? Oh yeah, poetry. If you want a class you can be creative in, take this one!

A friendly and at times funny teacher, but digresses in lectures! The class work is way more work than he tells you it is, and the expectations for it are fairly unclear. I did well in the end because I figured out that he wants detailed analysis, which is ok it's an english course, but he comes of

The passion this man has for his work makes the 8am class worth getting up for. The deliberately ambiguous project outline makes you think!!! What a refreshing approach to teaching when compared to the usual linear program of most classes.

awesome prof even though he put you on the spot and made you "say the names". wordbook was relatively easy, just make things up. easy marker if you know what he's looking for. upbeat guy, not boring and monotonous. only downer: he takes attendance.

Expects you to read his mind. Overall, he was fun, but it seemed like he only picked the literature that fit into his themes of naming and places, ignoring all other aspects of CanLit. He's an easy marker if you know what he's looking for (make it up).

This is how teaching at university should be. An Engl Prof who still appreciates and helps you appreciate literature, as opposed to so many Profs who are into theory first. Poetric, allowing, smart in a human way, balanced & fair.
