He is a very smart man. Truly made me think for myself. His number 1 goal for his students is improvement which is really nice as you have the option to rewrite an essay and truly progress in your reading and writing skills. He is very helpful although hard to understand with his large vocabulary.

Great professor. Based on the comments, it is clear to see the level of interest most students have in their own intellectual development. Considering that many students studying English have admitted to me that they "have not read a single book," I would hesitate before taking their advice. Take this class if you want to start thinking a little.

He is obviously a very intelligent man, but his teaching style is essentially a way for him to prove his genius rather than help students understand. That being said, he was a fair marker and rewarded effort and improvement. His lectures we frustrating, but in the end I did well and learned a lot.

Comment:
I would NOT recommend Len as a teacher. His lectures were nearly impossible to understand and unless your thinking was at his level, there is nearly no hope in his class. I emailed him a question about one of our assignments and he told me to listen better in class. His classes were also very boring and I found it hard to stay awake.

He's intimidating at first but actually is a very understanding and encouraging teacher. Course work was not too difficult, but lectures were tough. They were hard to follow and the notes he provided were not much help. To get something out of his lectures I had to focus completely and write down a dozen words to look up later.

I Could not understand anything he was saying, or follow the lectures. When I emailed him asking for help on my first essay he told me to listen better in class. I am sure he is a great teacher for those who understand his thinking but is very dismissive to those who do not. I do not recommend his class.

He had a dramatic impact on my reading and writing skills. He taught me to think critically, to ask my own questions, and to see creative ways to my own answers. The class is hard because critical thinking can't be a step by step program, but it is so worth the struggle. He's brilliant, fascinating to listen to, and respectful of alternative views.

Prof. Findlay is an absolute genius. The amount of work he puts into his class and the amount of help that he provides is astonishing. Nonetheless, his teaching style is very traditional and at times boring. He is, however, very flexible and helpful with essays, and there is a surprisingly small amount of work (5 essays over 2 terms!)

Prof. Findlay is very intelligent, but he is not very good at passing this on to his students. He is extremely unclear in his lectures and is also extremely boring. I never had any motivation to go to class. He marks very tough at first, but softens up later if you show an attempt to improve yourself. I don't recommend him!

Brilliant man. Very helpful and friendly after class. Only drawback is his huge vocabulary needs to be 'demystified'

He has very high expectations, but he is a fair marker. I learned more from him then any and possibly all other courses in university. He is a great guy, good sense of humor, but be prepared for a challenge.

The man is a genius. His brilliance intimidates, but he's not egotistical at all, and although his thoughts are eloquent and complex he understands that we aren't on his level. He marks very reasonably and cuts everyone a lot of slack. His material is always interesting, and in my entire B.A. English honors I may have learned the most from him.

Findley means well but he simply isn't very good at teaching. The man is smart but he tries too hard to prove it. As a result the average student is left digging throught the lectures to piece-together understanding. It is almost as if he uses his education & intelligence to intentionally bewilder his students, instead of to enlighten and simplify.

This professor is so intelligent and well read that it can sometimes be hard to follow his tangents. However, he is extremely helpful and his lectures are very informed and mind expanding. He was recently admitted into Canada's Royal Society, that is how outstanding his mind is.

Brilliant. I don't know what these people are talking about, he doesn't have an ego, but he is so smart that he can be incomprehensible at times. Only had to read two (short) books for a 6cu class. Loved this class.

HUGE ego, very pompous/arrogant, definitly needs to "dumb" down his teaching especially for first and second year courses. didn't learn anything from him.

Class wasn't hard in the sense of work, but it was hard to stay awake. Doesn't make things interesting. If nothing else he is good at talking to you one on one out of class, though you still might have to filter what he says to understand what he is actually saying.

It tokk me awhile to figure out what the heck he was talking about but the struggle was well worth it. He taught me how to think critically and has had the biggest impact on my academic career in comparison to any other prof. He has to realize though that he needs to "dumb down" some of the content.
