Comment:
Gougeon is a nice & intelligent man, but this is a bad class. He doesn't want to further your knowledge or understanding. He just wants to see his own ideas written in your papers. he rejects your own analysis or ideas. His grading does not really make sense either. He is very harsh in some areas,& then provides no feedback in others. Avoid

He is extremely condescending and thinks that his class is more important than the classes pertaining to our actual majors. He is very rude and unapproachable. He thinks he knows everything and he constantly puts down others ideas if it is not the same mentality as his. Do not take him if possible. Avoid this man at all costs.

Hilarious and insightful. Lectures were amazing, he explained the material clearly, prepared us well for exams, and I genuinely enjoyed coming to class each day. I don't think an English Literature professor could get any better. The only downside to the class was the 10 page term paper; that's a real pain with not much guidance. Overall, AMAZING!

Dr. Gougeon is VERY knowledgeable and passionate about English. He has an interesting POV but there's not a lot of class discussion. To get an A, take good notes and spit back what he says on exams and the research paper. He's more open to radically different opinions in class but not on the written assessments. Still recommend for his personality.

He's a good guy but makes you do the work. Not an easy class but definitely not impossible. You have to do the reading and do the papers in his specific format to do well. Attendance is mandatory. He's a good professor but don't take him if you're not going to take the class seriously

Good morning Scholars is enough said. Man thinks he walks on water. His papers are pathetic with the particular structure he MAKES you have. I wouldn't take him unless you desire to lower your GPA

AVOID if you do not enjoy analyzing literature. Class is very difficult. You'll get called on randomly so make sure you keep up with the readings. He gives pop quizzes. He hated the papers I wrote for him.

Looks like a character out of the movie "Anchorman" lol..Very impressed with his teaching.. It was a difficult class, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.. 2 blue book essay tests and a term paper, which are graded pretty tough.. Stay up on the readings and spit back Dr. Gougeon's views and you'll be fine.. I'd call him and Dr. Kraus the cream of the Dept.

One of the best classes I've had. He's brilliant and tells great jokes (haha). I think I've learned more in this class than I have all year, and he MAKES IT INTERESTING. The class is very hard, but if you talk to him, he's more than willing to help you out. :)

I started out bored out of my mind...but once we got to reading material I was interested in, the class became more interesting. He'll make you a better writer/reader by his papers and quizzes. TAKE NOTES on his class discussions...it will help A LOT on tests.

Simply put, one of the best professors I have ever had. He knows his stuff and is very enthusiastic about what he teaches. He wants his students to think and learn. Don't take the class if you're not into both. Overall, great prof. One you will definitely remember.

Definitely not an easy class. You have to attend always, have everything read because he randomly calls on you, and he is a pretty tough grader. The stories you read in class are good but I would avoid him if you are in your last semester and about to graduate and you don't want to do ANY work haha

Very interesting to say the least. Extremely intelligent, refers to students as "scholars". Class can be challenging, but for the most part as long as you read the stories you'll be in good shape. Papers must be very specific and reflect his views. 2 papers, midterm, final, a few random quizzes that are announced. Interesting class!

He is...interesting. It was the most challenging yet most difficult class ever. You have to play his way, you write the papers he wants them written you will get an A, take his considerations to heart, he's not a bad guy. If you take him, it's not the end of the world. He has a great sense of humor.

This was one of the most interesting and challenging courses that I have had. This prof. obviously loves this stuff and wants you to "get it." He's serious about learning so don't take the course if you're only cruising. He's demanding, but you'll get a lot out of it. Oh yea, he's got a great sense of humor, if you listen carefully.

You need to WORK in the class to get a decent, passable grade. Fun guy once you get to know him-loves the subject. He goes off on tangents like no other, and they last for the entire class-it can be a drone fest sometimes.
