Comment:
Professor Paris is a good Honours Seminar discussion coordinator and chair. She can be a bit strict in regards to attendance and is not an easy marker, but she is always willing to help the students. The feedback she gives back on essays and assignments is quite useful and she is always willing to talk to students in office hours.

Outstanding professor. Lectures and readings were very interesting. She is excellent at facilitating discussion and gave great feedback on written work. Assessment was fair, gave a lot of freedom in selecting final paper topic. One of the best classes of my undergrad.

Lectures were boring and unclear. Made me lose interest in the subject. Papers and Exams have high expectations but are given very vague instructions.

I really enjoyed her course. As a first time history student, the assessment was adequate, the reading load was totally manageable and she allowed for a first draft before the final paper was due on which she gave lots of helpful feedback. The exams were straightforward as well. I found her marking to be very fair and I would take her class again.

Lacking basic respect. Unpredictable and sometimes quite unreasonable. Often rude.

Worst class hands down I have ever taken as an undergrad. Her marking scheme is more than unreasonable and her lectures are dry and boring. Reading expectations far too high, and her TAs were appalling.

Comment:
HORRIBLE. Too many readings, the TAs are stuck up and rude, the essay marking is absolutely unfair (No one does better than below average), the exams are INSANELY DIFFICULT. For a 2nd year level course, the expectations are irrational. TA made me cry. She made me hate history, it actually came down to that. Worst course I've ever taken at UBC.

Perhaps Professor Paris has lowered her standards, but she certainly is not as difficult as previous posts have indicated. The class average was a 77 -- that's pretty damn high. Beyond that, she was very helpful, knowledgeable, and approachable, and managed to engage me, despite my indifference toward the subject matter.

took the course back in 2004. Maybe she's improved since then, but who knows? For me it was the worst class I took in undergrad.

huge disappointment. readings were okay, but lectures were cutesy and tedious, the exams convoluted and the grading very abitrary. Prof is just awful, pretentious, unhelpful, and just too into herself and her own issues to be concerned with her students. She's really weak on subjects not trendy or feminist history.

Very interesting lecturer ...very energetic. She is a very hard marker, but you also have to realize that I think she has a degree in english as well, so that is why she is so picky with the type of writer everyone is. Overall, if you put in the effort..the mark you get is the mark you deserve.

Boring lectures, unclear concepts and way, way too much reading. Everything in history must somehow have a feminist message according to her. If you like history do yourself a favour and avoid taking anything from this pedant.

her exams questions are ridiculous, she is an awful teacher who frequently asks questions of the students that she can not answer herself. her exam questions are wordy and unclear, sounds like she is trying hard to sound intelligent

There weren't too many readings for this course, mostly primary documents and a decent book by Eric Foner. The marks all get fitted into a happy middle, nobody fails and nobody does really well...

Interesting lecturer and reasonable amount of weekly readings. However, she has the most illogical marking scheme ever. If you don't bring women or feminism into every answer, you are guaranteed no better than a B-/C+

I must say i am shocked that anyone could give this prof a decent rating, Her marking system has absolutely no logic behind it. Her knowledge of 20th century history is not at all acceptable for a university teacher.
