LVL teaches topics for life. For once, courses that teach you about your personal self, and daily interaction. What is going on in seemingly overlooking interactions. Once you graduate, you might think back and REALLY appreciate his style, topics, and simplicity. Just do your work, think, make an effort, and this class will change you.

Had no clear grading system; when asked about expectations, would give no answer and tell you to "find your way", yet still gave bad grades; didn't use half of reading marked as required to purchase; smelled really really bad. Stay as far away from this joke as possible.

Only LVL can convince 80 college students the intricacies of S&M. Yes, you heard me... S&M. LVL takes very sensitive topics, and just changes your world/ideas. This class is so worth it -- do the readings, do the post. Don't fritter, just do it. After ten weeks you might just thank me for writing this on Rate My Professors.

went off topic sometimes. didn't use all textbooks assigned. reader didn't contain needed articles. no clear grading rubric. no syllabus til 3rd week of class. presented interesting topics, but felt it could have been done better. assignments were random and vague.

worst. soc. class. ever. assigned books that were never used, lectures were foggy at best, assignments were unclear and vague. didn't feel that what was taught really pertained to the topic in anyway. prof seemed more intent on sharing buddhist ways of life than teaching urban sociology. no syllabus until 3 week of class and reader was useless.

Worst instructor I've ever had for any class ever, and it's my major. Was meant to be an Urban Society course, but what we learned did not match the course description at all. You never get any of your work back, so unless you ask the TA you won't know your grade. Readings are nauseating. Assignments are useless. Who gave her a Ph.D. anyway?

This class was by far the WORST class I have ever taken while at UCSB. She teaches based on what she "felt" was a good enough topic. I felt stupid sitting in a class where all we did one day was watch a slideshow on SIDEWALKS!!! The class had no structure at all. Too much of a hippie for me and a waste of my time.

We buy 6 bks for this class and don't really use them, then we have to buy a wkbk from her that should cost $6 but she charged 47 for. No respect for our time: assignments by email on Sat., due on Sun. Random irrelevant assignments on the side. When concerns are brought to her, she's "teaching us to live with uncertainty." No clear grading policy.

Linda Van Leuven should either: A) Stop writing her own reviews on Rate My Professor B) Make a better effort to vary her writing style in these positive reviews.

Comment:
Very interesting reading material, however Dr. Van Leuven is extremely biased and refuses to allow actual discussion if students disagree with her point of view. She can be hostile, scream, and grade down based on personal opinion rather than academic merit. Frustrating even if you agree with her. Only mind blowing if you have no prior knowledge.

LVL is energetic and passionate, but very biased. I took her class "Contested Sexualities," which touched on the feminist sex debates of the 80s/90s, but we only read one side of the arguments (Bright, Califa, etc), and this perspective was presented as truth rather than opinion. Lectures were full of strawman attacks and disdain for opposing views

There are tons of good comments about her. Just warning people that she's not for everyone. I guess you either buy into what she has to say and love her or you don't (like me), and it's just boring and really annoying. She yells like everything she says is the most profound thing ever said. I got an A in the class, still regret taking it.
