As a poli sci in my final year, I found this class rudimentary but interesting. Lisa is kind, marks everything fair with comments, and enjoys teaching. overlap between lectures and tutorials, and the course booklet was expensive considering we used e-journals 50% of the time. Take this course if you enjoy discussing democracies in transition.

This has been one of my favourite courses so far. She is a very clear teacher, and the course material is very interesting. I am enjoying writing the paper, the group discussions make the class fun, and the clear notes make it not necessary to attend class. Will be looking at taking courses with her in the future!

Don't TAKE THIS CLASS!!! It is a waste of tuition money. Very few current readings and mostly memorization of terms. There's hardly any discussion of current events or military intervention in democratization. There was one reading on Iraq and none on Afghanistan.

She's an okay prof..easy class that you don't actually have to go to it to learn anything..just read her notes...the class itself is mostly common sense, especially if you've taken other poli sci classes..in terms of learning extremely interesting new material, it could've been better....

Comment:
Organized and overall clear about most things. Course itself is not great. More about memorizing a democratization discourse, little room for creative and independent critical thought. Major project in this course is uncoventional. Intstructions are extensive and strucured nevertheless is confusing and even kind of silly.

The class was a little slow, but then again, the material isn't really that enthralling to begin with. The final essay requires quite a bit of thinking, and our TA seemed to be a little tough on the marking, but this will likely vary every year.

Awesome prof: both professional and approachable. She is especially helpful in office hours- I went to see her about my paper topic and she practically gave me a bibliography. She puts thought into marking papers, and really respects student opinions. Writes great recommendation letters too. Note that she values punctuality, so be on time.

You'll have to learn by analysis and logic, not just sucking in other people's ideas and information. Values the students personal experiences and engagement with the phenomena we're studying (that was refreshing) great prof.

Hard work and independent thought really pays off in this class. she is not w/out opinions--she simply doesn't want to impose them..that is an ideal way to conduct a poli sci course. really tried to brace varied concepts and topics. awesome prof.

excellent, one of the best profs in the dept for sure. clear and consise. be original and challenge yourself on the paper, but follow the instructions. the marking was "hard" but fair. she should be teaching more classes.

One of the best profs I've had. Has clearly worked hard to be prepared, detailed lectures, well-structured course design. The readings can be a little heavy at times, but she makes up for that by demonstrating a clear commitment to helping you learn, something most other UBC profs don't do so well.

Excellent prof, very clear and open to discussion. Doesn't want to impose an opinion on the class, so does her best to get to all sides of the issue. Very fair marker, perhaps even a little easier than many others.

Reminds me of my grade 10 english teacher - she gives out candy and draws names out of hats. Great notes, helpful, prepared and thourough, but wishy-washy in her opinions. Overall a quality prof.

She is an excellent prof. I agree that she should teach more courses. UBC poli sci department really needs more young energetic profs like her. Very nice detailed notes and loves when students come talk to her during the office hours. Very detailed breakdown of paper marks - helps you to improve.

Really detailed lectures, which is good if IR is your thing. You have to do the readings or else the final will be a pain. Great person, real helpful and open.
